A Guilty Alma gets a late night visit from her regressed son
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Ay, Pedro..." the matriarch's voice was quivering and quiet, holding back her tears as she sat by the window near their beloved candle. The sign of their miracle. "Mi amor, please, help me to mend the relationships I have ruined. Help me build a better bond with Mirabel, help me to..." she hesitated, looking up to the sky that twinkled in the night glow. "Help me be a better mother to our mijo, my Brunito...who I've done nothing but hurt"
Bruno had been back for three days now, and the elder woman was ashamed of how little she'd managed to talk to him. It wasn't from lack of trying. It just seemed that every attempt, she's freeze up, think of what is there to say and how to fix broken mistakes. She had made a promise to Bruno of love and change, but she'd barely demonstrated that during the last seventy-two hours.
Alma felt like she could actually cry, but she was interupted by a very light knock on her door. She was almost sure she had imagined it, until it occured again, slightly louder yet more hesitant. Before she could even think of answering, Casita swung the door wide open, revealing the man in question. An upset and obviously regressed Bruno Madrigal, if the pacifier and stuffie was anything to go by.
"Mijo?" "M...Mamá, 'm not feels well...a-an'..." the stuttering little hid his face behind his frog teddy he held so close, afraid his mother would get mad at him. "...l-lo siento..." The guilty expression along with his apology made the elder woman's heart ache. She has caused so much damage, she was so ashamed of how long it took her to snap out of that perfectionist view that had traumatised her family. She'd hurt her baby boy so much, in ways his selfless heart and kind, loving personality didn't deserve. "Mi Brunito, come here, it's okay"
Seeing that Alma didn't have a negative reaction he had half expected, the scared little took one, two, three cautionary steps into the room. Then five turned into ten, until he was running into his mothers arms with a sad cry. "Mamá....mamá..." he sobbed his feelings out into his mothers nightie, her arms around Bruno's shaking frame. Alma wasn't sure why she could no longer force her tears back, but she didn't bother to hide them. She just silently cried with her niño, whispering small reassurances for the both of them until he calmed.
"Mi Brunito, how small do you feel?" Alma asked her son carefully, not letting her grip loosen as he looked up at her. "Uhms...f-five...i-i t'inks..." he twisted his foot side to side nervously. "Uhm...m-me wets, too..." he blushed slightly, and the matriarch only then realized how her boy's pants were absolutely soaked. "Oh, mi bebé...come on, lets get you changed, hm?"
"G-Gracias, mamá"
"De nada, chiquito". Alma certainly wasn't the best mother in the world, and had five decades worth of mistakes to make up for, but she knew now that Bruno needed her more than ever. And, maybe she needed her baby boy too. Either way, she had a happy sense that things would be alright in the near future.
