You and the guys have played in the sandlot since you could remember. You grew up as one of the boys, the girl that they would look at and go, 'Oh yeah, she's cool' and never treated you differently then the rest. And that was great. Until it wasn't.Lately, as you enter the summer leading up to freshman year, you had started to develop feelings for your best friend, Benny. But you were absolutely sure that he only saw you as one of the guys, his best friend, basically a sister. You sat in class, waiting for the bell to ring, dismissing you from your last class until September, a note slid onto your desk.
You look quizzically at Benny to your left, the direction the note came from, but he completely ignored you. Opening the letter, it read, 'Wanna see if you can spend the night tonight?'. You blushed and wrote a 'yes' on the note, sliding it back to Benny, watching him open it and smile. The bell rang and you sprang up from you seat, running out of class.
You all but sprinted down the hallway, only to stop and frown and see Bryce leaning against your locker to wait for you. Sighing, you walked to your locker, "You're blocking my locker Conners."
"I'm aware, and I'm not moving until you agree to go out with me." He flashes a smile that make you want to throw up.
"I have plans til I'm 70, sorry. Now move please."
He didn't budge, grabbing your forearm as you tried to shove him away, "Please? You gotta be free tonight right?"
"No she's not actually," the voice surprised you, seeing Benny walk up to you two, wrapping his arm around your waist, making you blush, "Y/n and I are actually going on a date tonight, sorry Brycie."
Bryce huffed, glaring at the two of you and walking away. Benny glared at him the whole time, his arm not once leaving your waist.
"Thanks Ben, guys been giving me a hard time since March."
"Why didn't you say anything to me or the guys?" He asks as you open your locker to grab your stuff.
"I can hold my own Benny, remember the time I punched Phillips for telling me I could do better than the sandlot?"
Benny laughs and grabs your bag from you, a regular occurrence, as you walk down the hall, "How could I forget? Ham was yelling in my ear." You both shared a laugh, walking out of the bustling exit pushing past students and heading towards the sandlot.
"You gotta spend the night at mine again soon Benny boy, ma misses seeing you around."
"Next time, I have something special planned for tonight." Benny informs you, a million thoughts racing in your head. Was he going to ask you out? Is it something bad? What if- "Whatcha thinking about?" Benny pries, looking down at you.
"Nothing, just thinking about how the boys will react now that they'll have to handle next year alone." Benny nods and you continue to walk in silence. "We should stop at my house so I can change and ask ma if it's alright to stay over." You mention and he hums in agreement, taking a left onto your guys road.
"I'm gonna stop home too, I'll meet you at the sandlot." Benny says and you say your goodbyes, walking into your house. "Hey ma," you stop in the kitchen, "Is it alright if I stay at Ben's tonight?"
"Sure sweetie, be back tomorrow by 4, ok? Your father wants to go out and have a nice dinner, you could even bring Benny, I'm sure Julieta wouldn't mind." She says as she continues cleaning, humming a tune.
"Alright thanks ma, I'm gonna change then head to the sandlot, I'll be back at 5 to grab stuff." She hums and you race toward your room, changing into some old jeans and a t shirt you stole from Benny back in October. You grab a hair tie and your glove, racing downstairs, yelling a goodbye and running to the sandlot. Only Squints and Yeah Yeah were there so far.
