Niall's POV:
Piper stops talking to Greg for like a nano-second so I take my opportunity. I walk up to them and grab Piper's hand and pull her away.
"What the heck, Niall?" She asks, yanking her hand away from mine angrily. Well you know what, I'm mad too, so I don't give a crap.
"I have been waiting for half and hour for you to stop talking so we could leave!" She huffs and crosses her arms, tossing her brown waves over her shoulder.
"Why don't you just leave? I'm a big girl, I can walk myself home." It feels like she slapped me in the face. We always walk with each other. Piper looks like she regrets it a little, but she doesn't back down.
"Fine. I will. Don't call me," I yell over my shoulder as I yank my hood up to avoid the pouring rain. That hurt. That really hurt.
"What makes you think I'd want to?" She yells back, spreading her hands in emphasis. She walks over and starts talking animatedly with Greg, and gives him her number, just so I can see. My emotions clash in horrible mix of pain and anger. Tears threaten to fall, but the rain hides it. I stalk down the sidewalk, and I can't help but wonder why she's so mad at me. I wasn't trying to treat her like a kid, I just like walking with her. As if on cue, I hear shoes slap against the cement until she catches up to me.
"Niall wait! I'm sorry!" I turn and face her. She's shivering there, her long brown hair sticking to her face. She bites her lip nervously.
"You know what?" I have to yell over the sound of the rain. "If you were really sorry, you would have apologized in front of Greg! You would have walked with me in the first place! You would have sat with me during lunch! You wouldn't have ignored me! So don't you dare give me that crap about being sorry!" She gapes at me and I can tell she's hurt. I know I went too far, but my emotions were a mess and I didn't know how to react. She tugs her jacket tighter around her, and even through the rain I can see a single tear roll down her cheek. Without another word, she shoves past me, wiping away her tears even though its pouring rain. I watch her get further and further away, regretting all the stupid things I said. Sheets of rain attack me relentlessly, but I couldn't care less. Who knows when she'll talk to me again. A mini van pulls up next to me, but I ignore it.
"Niall! Why the heck are you standing out here in the rain?" I turn and see Nikki, my other next-door neighbor, yelling out of the driver's window. I shrug and start walking down the sidewalk. "Do you want a ride?" I sigh.
"Sure. But I'll get your car all wet," I reply. This time it's her turn to shrug.
"It doesn't matter. Climb in!" I walk to the other side and open the door, sliding in carefully so I don't get her car too wet. "So why are you all depressed?"
"Piper and I got in a fight because I was jealous of her and Greg." She steps on the gas and we start moving. She glances at me briefly and I can tell she's confused.
"So are you and Piper a thing now?" I run my hands through my hair.
"Nope. We're just friends. Although now we might not even be friends."
"I think you're taking steps in the wrong direction, mate," she jokes, giving me a small grin. I roll my eyes.
"Could we not joke about it right now?"
"Okay I'm sorry. And don't worry. You and Piper have been friends for years! She'll come around." I fake a watery smile, and that's all I can manage. She probably hates me.
