"Mr. Solarez uses too much figurative language for our small middle school brains to handle," Lazlo sighed, Whispering to a clueless 6th grader. "Even Eddie, top of our class can't get them."
"What's the thing with all the shiny cylinders on it.?" The 6th grader asked Lazlo
"Those are chimes young Trumpeter. You will learn someday."
"Where's Ed?" A kid sitting next to the 6th grader, called Leroy whispered over their shoulder to Lazlo
"One by One, All of you share your name and instrument! I'm excited to get to know you all!" Mr. Solarez said joyfully. "We all know you all worked so hard to get in, and it's well deserved! Welcome to DSA!"
"Leo. Trombone!"
"Nadia. Flute. How long is this gonna take?"
"Tara. Tuba. Shut up Nadia."
"Lazlo. Percussion. I play more instruments than Shea can fit in her big ass room"
"Lazlo? Language."
"Sorry"
"Erica. French Horn. My instrument has enough plumbing for an entire third world country"
"Atlas Allen. Trumpet. When you put the trumpets and horns together it's chaos AKA Frumpet"
"Shea. My room is bigger than Lazlo's Mom and Dad's house combined! Clarinet."
"Leroy. Alto Saxophone. Where's Edward?"
"Rowan. Bass clarinet. No, I don't play a bigger blacker saxophone with a curlier neck. Ed's Late. As always"
The rest of the band continued until everyone had shared.
"That was.. eventful.. Now that we have gotten to know you all better we're gonna start with your first graded assignment!" Solarez said pointing at all the 6th graders.
Several people around the circle said:
"Already?"
"What?"
"But Mr. Solarez!"
"Come on guys. Some of you guys this is your second or third year! You should know what this is! The scales Aptitude test!" He said excitedly, "Normally we do this after a week of working together but I've decided this year to put our co-operative skills to the test and play on the first day!"
Leroy whispered to the 6th graders sitting next to him "He's intense but he's never done ANYTHIng quite like this before!" Lazlo told them "He gives us all a piece to sight-read all together but we've never had to practice and play something with strangers!"
"Your groups are..."
"Don't put me with Lazlo. He's weird." Shea said Looking to Nadia, then to Mr. Solarez, then To Lazlo.
Ignoring her he says "Lazlo, Shea, Raina, and Rowan you are group 1!" He said paying no attention whatsoever to shea.
"WHAT?!" Lazlo and Shea said in Unison.
"There is no way I'm working with that brat!" Lazlo said.
"I don't understand your rivalry. 7th graders are weird.." Rowan an 8th grader said sighing and rolling his eyes.
Raina, another new 6th grader who looked clueless whispers to him, "What's their problem?"
"You'll get used to it. they're like this all the time." Rowan says glumly.
"You all will be practicing by the doors outside! Good luck!"
"Shea Herrera, I will not make this easy for you," Lazlo said walking out the door with a set of bells in his hands. He glared at her.
As they walked out dozens of "awww"s "yessss" and "Nooooo!"'s came from the band room as more of them walked outside.
"Game on Shea. We may win the challenge but it'll be cause of me, Not you."
