The loud stomping of his boots echoed throughout the hall.

Coven guards of all duties and ranks hurried to press themselves flush against the walls as he passed, throwing their hands up to their foreheads in a salute.

The golden guard was having a bad day.

Usually, the guards of the emperors coven wouldn't be this wary around the golden guard, sometimes he could even be kind of fun. It was always entertaining to listen to him quip and bicker with whatever enemy they were up against. But today, just a few hours into the day and he'd already demoted five guards to sanitation duty and reprimanded another three.

"Everyone on patrol, now! I want her found" he sneered.

His voice echoed throughout the hall, his anger reverberating off the walls. It was enough to send the guards running into action.

Inwardly they all groaned.

They'd been chasing you for close to a month and you hadn't been sighted in over a week, this was getting tiring.
They just couldn't understand why he kept letting you go.

-

When he first saw you he knew it would be an easy catch.

You were young, maybe a little older than him but still young and inexperienced, your clothes were ratty, and you held yourself in a way that screamed mischief. His eyes had been trained on you the moment he'd stepped into town.

The potion bottle glistened in your hand, and he narrowed his eyes. You'd been picking up and putting down bottles for a while now, he was sure you would try something, the glint in your eyes was nothing but mischievous.
He watched intently as you clumsily slipped the bottle into your satchel.

"Hey! Put that down!" He yelled, the troops beside him clenched their fists preparing for action.

Your half-mask-clad face turned towards him in shock.

With powerful strides, he made his way towards you. He saw that same mischievous glint in your eye as you slowly pocketed another item, winked at him and took off in the opposite direction.

He guffawed for a second,
'she wasn't even intimidated' he thought before he launched himself after you with a growl.

"Cut them off on the other side" he yelled to his scouts.

Nodding in affirmation, they set off the other way.

He was hot on your heels as he chased you through the market, expertly dodging any carts or bins you knocked over as you ran. Darting to the side you took a sharp turn into an alley, he smiled smugly to himself knowing it was a dead end. As you disappeared from his sight, he pushed himself to run faster, ignoring the aches in his tired legs.

'I've got you now' he thought.

Skidding to a stop, he turned into the alley.

Behind his mask, the smug expression he'd worn just a second ago was replaced with shock.

You were gone.

It was a dead-end, the walls were far too high for you to have climbed.

He looked around in confusion.

"Golden guard!" You called in a singsong tone.

His head snapped upwards, he shielded his eyes from the sun and stared at where your voice had come from.

Sure enough, you were standing at the top of the wall smugly throwing and catching a no doubt expensive stolen potion.

With a wave and that same mischievous glint in your eye, you took off. Running and jumping across the rooftops. He couldn't do anything but stare after you in shock.
