Blasts of magic flew past you as you ran.

Blindingly bright spells seared stray tufts of your hair as you dodged their trajectory, the slight smell of burn invaded your nostrils though you did your best to ignore it.

Mere hours ago you'd been lounging on Hunter's bed, swaddled in scratchy moth-eaten blankets as you watched the latest episode of his current obsession. His body had been warm beside you, the hard muscles of his arm pressed up against your own.

You loved that he let you see this side of him. The soft side, the one that curled up against you and told you things he'd never dare tell anyone else. It'd make your heart swell and you were powerless to stop the lovesick grin that'd slide its way into your expression.

He never failed to make you feel so overwhelmingly loved.

Shaking the memory from your head you furrowed your brows and focused more on the task at hand. Escaping the emperors' coven.

You'd done this a thousand times before, snuck in and then back out again but never had you actually had the coven guards after you.

A violent push sent you stumbling forward, your legs buckled as a searing pain bloomed in the shoulder that you were struck. With a soft thud, you hit the ground, kneecaps and palms taking the brunt of the fall and leaving them with a bone-deep ache.

You hissed in pain as you gently turned to survey the damage done to your shoulder. A hole had been burnt through your outer tunic leaving the scorch marks on your skin less severe than you'd first assumed. At least that was something.

Grunting at the sudden movement you pushed yourself to your feet and began to flee once again.

Your footsteps smacked against the rocky terrain in rhythmic thuds, dirt swirled at your feet and left muddy stains on your lower legs.

As the voices of determined guards drew nearer, your efforts to flee increased tenfold. Searching for an out, you spotted the nearly deserted entrance at the tree line. Swerving from the path you shoved the market shoppers out of the way, leaving a chorus of "Hey!" "Watch where you're going!" "Asshole!" to follow you.

The sound of the emperors' covens loud footsteps spurred you on. If they caught you, there was no telling what torture the emperor would bestow upon you and you weren't sticking around to find out.

The terrain beneath you was rough, leaves and twigs crackled under your weight.

Unsure of your destination, you pressed on driven by instinct. Your breath came in ragged gasps, and your entire body ached from the strain. Your vision became hazy, your heart pounded in your ears, and the air you gulped in suddenly burned within you. You instinctively reached for your ribcage, clutching the fabric that covered it in a weak attempt at soothing the pain.

In that split second of distraction, your feet slipped out from under you, sending your body tumbling downhill. Sharp rocks cut into your cheeks, and jagged sticks tore into your skin, a cry of alarm was torn from you as the force of gravity played with you like a puppet on a string.

With a sickening crunch, your body was thrown to the rocky surface that lay at the bottom of the hill. Tears pricked at your eyes as you felt every bone in your body creak. The wind knocked from your lungs as you gasped in as much air as your body allowed. Tomorrow, you'd be battered and bruised, but at least you'd be alive.

With bleary eyes you pulled yourself up, leaning heavily against a tree to regain your sense of balance.

Slowly, with uncoordinated steps, you kept going. It wasn't until you could no longer hear the angry mob of the emperors' coven that you allowed yourself to slow down.
