*This is a continuation of the previous chapter, this takes place towards the end*

Why did he keep letting you go?

Glaring at the ground as if it were the cause of all his problems, he kicks it until dirt swirls around his boots. With shoulders slumped in defeat, he trudges back to the bridge and signals the guards to let him back in.

"Did you get her sir?" the scout guarding the bridge asks.

He fixes them with a stony glare and begins the walk back to his room.

-

He walks slowly, a permanent scowl on his face.
As he walks the coven guards glance at him, then raise their gloved hands to whisper to each other.

He doesn't know what they say.

The whispers follow after him as he continues on.
He's determined to seem oblivious to it all, he refuses to be weak.

As he gets closer and closer to the emperors hall he feels his muscles becoming more tense by the second. The happiness he'd felt mere minutes ago seemingly dissipated on the short walk back to his room, and he hadn't even made it there yet.
With all the strength he has, he wishes Belos does not greet him as he nears the emperors hall.

As he comes up to the corridor leading to his uncle, his heart thumps rapidly. Its a different feeling than when it beats for you he recognises.
He squares his shoulders, keeping his head resolutely straight on. He can almost feel his presence, sweat beads at his temples and the raging anxiety within him washes over in waves, its unbearable.

"Hunter" His voice calls sweetly. His voice sounds like nails on a chalkboard to Hunter, is it normal to fear a voice?

He turns to the emperor, making sure to relax the muscles in his face as he turns.
"I thought we might have a chat"

Hunter smiles, not quite genuine enough, and walks towards him. He knows what will happen next and he knows he can't stop it, he knows what this is about.
Belos places a hand on his shoulder and leads him to the door, the grip tightens to the point of bruising the closer they get.
He feels the sinking feeling of dread and soon the door closes shut, although it shuts slowly the soft echo rattles within Hunters chest each vibration pounding against his ribs.

He looks towards the shut door and lets the familiar feeling of numbness settle over him.

-

Its hours later that he finds himself laying face up in bed.
His body is bruised and his muscles ache.
Flapjack chirps softly and nuzzles against his cheek. Hunter can't bring himself to react.
Its then that Flapjack gives up, tweeting dejectedly and flying out the still open window, it hadn't been shut since you'd crawled through it.

Turning his head towards the open window, his neck aches from the movement, he watches Flapjacks retreating form.
A deep sadness courses through him, he doesn't confront it, instead rolling from the window and laying on his side.
He closes his stinging eyes and lets the gentle sound coming from the open window lull him to sleep.

-

"Woah-"

His eyes snap open, they feel swollen and sore.
Jumping up he turns to the sound.
Your hair sways gently from the breeze circulating his room, you're just slightly leaned over him. He blinks at you blearily, eyes steadily fixing their focus on you. Not less than a minute later realisation hits him.

"You?" He says tiredly
"What're you doing here?"

He hasn't seen this expression on your face before, He's not sure he likes it.
Your brows aren't furrowed but they're tense and a strained almost smile rests on your lips, there is nothing but concern in your eyes.
Nevertheless, you easily switch expressions and smile warmly at him, butterflies swarm within his chest threatening to crawl up his throat and expose his deepest secrets to you.
He swallows them down, willing his traitorous heart to stop beating for you.
