St. Francis Catholic School, Newport RI

Jae and I hadn't been back to Newport in three years, and I'd forgotten how quickly autumn settled over New England. Shivering as I sat on the cold metal bleachers with a blanket covering my legs.

Friday night lights were shining down on the field as the marching band took the field, playing some variation of a recent movie.

"Which direction is the plane coming from?" Ji Woo asked.

She was holding a squirming Leo on her lap, Easton and Luis' one-year-old baby boy. He had thick jet-black hair and adorably squishy cheeks, and he was currently trying to escape his grandmother's lap.

The little boy reached for me, and I let him crawl in my lap. Then he stuck his hand in my box of popcorn.

"I'm not sure which way they're coming from," I told my mother-in-law. The school had asked Jae if he'd participate in a Veteran's ceremony and jump out of a plane onto the football field. So, here we were, waiting for him to do just that.

My own mother patted my back before feeding Leo a bite of her ice cream cone. "You doing okay, Millie?"

I nodded, trying to avoid her inquisitive stare. "I'm just freezing. I'm not used to it being this cold on my birthday."

We watched the marching band show, which seemed to hold little Leo's attention as he sat on my lap until the band cleared the field to make way for Jae's big jump.

"Now, for the event you've all been waiting for! Former St. Francis graduate and Navy SEAL Lieutenant Jae Lee will be parachuting down onto the field for a special awards ceremony!"

Easton tried to coax Leo from my arms. "Come sit with daddy, Leo."

The toddler shook his head, and my mom and I laughed as she shoveled another bite of ice cream into his mouth.

"Looks like he wants to sit with auntie tonight," I teased Easton, who laughed.

"And I'll be calling auntie at one in the morning when he can't sleep because you've fed him a thousand grams of sugar and carbs."
