Tyler's Pov
What time is it? I glanced at my wristwatch accusingly. Why did it have to be so slow?
"Tyler! Pick it up!" yelled a voice from behind me.
"Sorry Coach!" I sped up my pace, annoyed at the circling motions Coach Vastor was making with his hand. Seriously? More laps? Coach blew his whistle loudly at some kid standing in the corner.
I loath gym class. The Coach's methods don't make it any easier. I continued with my laps, doubled when Coach blew his whistle. He was merciless. 6 minutes to go, groaned my aching legs.
I glanced back over my shoulder at the kid Coach had yelled at, and was continuously doing so, with wide arm motions. O-oh-ohhh, that boy is about to get a mouthful. He must be new.
The boy caught me staring as I was doing arm circles across the gym. I gave him a questioning look,
What the fuck are you doing?
He just winked at me. Here we go again. A boy just like him moved away from here, he had that, "I'm a bad boy and chicks will drool when I look at them" kind of vibe, just like this imbecile here.
I swear, I'm questioning the dignity of those girls.
I shook my head, done with this shit, and continued running my laps. Already moving on from the super cute bad boy right behind me.
...
"But why?? He was perfect for you!" Tamy gave an appalled look on the facetime call we've been on for two and a half hours already.
I set down my pencil and put one of my long braids over my other shoulder. "Tam, I broke up with Carson because he was a cheating bastard who had no respect for anybody except himself. He made me depressed and I didn't enjoy one second of being around him. And now he's free to go cheat on anyone except me." I massaged my temples, exhausted from this topic.
Tamy has been the only person in my life for the longest time. It's just been Tyler and Tamy, friends forever. And then she introduced me to Carson. The hot new kid who lived down the street from her little bungalow. He seemed perfect, kind, sober, good-looking, and smart. Everything the boys at our high school weren't.
We were together for 6 months before he was introduced to the "popular group". That changed him completely. He ghosted me for several days, started drinking, and yelled at me for no goddamn reason. Until he pulled the last straw by cheating on me with the school whore. So then I dumped him. End of story.
"I'm sorry it ended like that, Tiles. I had so much hope for you two, you are just so lonely all the time," oh. Shit. Tamy is crying.
"No please don't cry Tam, this topic is clearly hurting us both, and it's not going well. I'll call you later, ok?" she nodded shakily, trying to hold in her watery tears. Tamy sniffed and hit the end button.
I let out a deep breath. I need to get out of here, homework can wait another drowsy night.
In the living room, I checked to make sure that my mother was where I had left her this afternoon, passed out drunk on the couch. I saw her shiver and put a semi-warm blanket over her small form. She stirred but didn't wake.
I packed some snacks, my laptop, and phone, and my wireless earphones. Making sure I jumped over the creaky boards, I snuck out the back door and headed towards the 24-hour cafe.
I had been doing this so often that the barista who worked there was already preparing my extra caramel cappuccino with sprinkled peanuts when I walked in the door.
"Hey Carry," I greeted as I sat down at my usual spot in the far corner by the picture window. She waved enthusiastically, bringing over my food. Carry was mute, and she hasn't talked since her parents were brutally murdered in front of her when she was only seven. Her boss shoved her onto the night shift because of this.
"How was work today?" Thumbs up. "Make any new friends?" a frown and a shaken head. "Want any help?" shaken head and a smile. "I'll leave you to it then." thumbs up.
Carry wiped her hands on her green apron and hung out on her phone, waiting for any new customers, which was unlikely.
I moved my braids behind my shoulders and expanded my beats headphones to fit my head, falling into the routine. But before I could even start my music, some very drunk guy stumbled into the empty cafe, almost face-planting on the entryway.
"Hello, little, mm, lady." he slurred to Carry. "would you kindly pass the money over to me," the guy looked a little green. I removed my headphones and slipped between him and Carry, who looked scared and at a loss of what to do.
"I'm very sorry sir but you can't be in here, this is an alcohol-free zone." I pointed to the sign at the door, but he seemed to barely register my words. he stuck his hand out to Carry. He had a gun. "give me your damn money, girly." Carry stuck her hands in the air but didn't budge, as I made my way around the counter. the man's focus was entirely on Carry as she slowly reached towards the till to empty it out. Oh, poor Carry, she was shaking so much, but the man's gun remained steadily pointed at her heart.
The man's eyes drifted towards me. "Hey!" he swerved the gun in my direction. "what do you think you're doing? stay right there, otherwise, you'll have to pay a visit to the hospital." my fingers were an inch from the hidden gun underneath the counter. Just one more twitch of my fingers...
Crash! the man fell unconscious on the floor of the cafe. and behind him, with a broken bottle in his hands, was the boy from gym class.
