LEAH RILKE

"All right, help me out with the timeline here," Agent Young spoke for the first time since the interrogation had started, consulting the clipboard in his hand and making notes in the margins. "How long had you been out in the water?"

Leah shrugged, unsure.

"I don't know."

"Two, three hours?" Agent Young suggested, hoping for one of the times to resonate with the young girl. "I'm just trying to pinpoint when the crash occurred."

"I honestly don't know."

"From the crash until you spotted the shoreline," Agent Young clarified, "you can't give me a ballpark estimate?"

"Look, I don't mean to be difficult," Leah sighed, her breathing uneven under the interrogative gazes of the two agents sat across from her. "But after the plane went down, there was a blackout period. So the beginning, it's... it's all a blur. And not just for me. No one knew the full timeline. Not even the ones that came to on the island..."

"MAAAAAARTHA! MAAAAAARTY!"

The distant shouts made Blaire flicker her eyes open, startled, as she coughed up the water that filled her lungs. Her first thought, as she hazily registered the view of the island shoreline, was of Heaven; the ultraviolet rays of the sun shimmered on her skin and the melody of the waves crashing around her sounded as peaceful as anything she'd heard before.

Blaire spluttered, wiping her lips on the sleeve of her shirt before her fingertips dug into the sand beneath her, attempting to move her body but it was no use. Sure enough, as her dark brown eyes adjusted, she raised her head and knew that any prospect of Heaven she'd once dreamt of was far from reality. With feelings of disorientation, she cursed under her breath and let her body collapse onto the sand.

Stranded... on an island...

"Holy shit!" came the sound of an approaching voice, and Blaire felt as though she was slowly losing her mind. However, as she felt someone's hand on her shoulder, Blaire felt the rush of adrenaline and panic bubble within the depths of her stomach. Without realizing it, she'd kicked herself free and scrambled back towards the shoreline, hyperventilating, as though it was an instinctive result of her trauma.
