I quickly walked towards my boss's house, dreading it but wanting to get it over with. I lightly knocked and hoped "The Man" was out but sadly heard her unnatural high voice say, "Come in!" Her nickname, "The Man," was given to her because I sometimes think her normally deep voice, she used only when men were not around, was just like a large man. Even though she was a good bit shortier then most men, or women.
I took a deep breath and walked inside and saw her sitting on her sofa counting her money on the table in front of it. "I cleared my throat, as I walked closer, so she would look up and notice it was me and not one of her common "customer". She looked up and groaned, "oh, its just the sea witch." I rolled my eyes at her name for me, very few outside the family knew of our powers, she only knew since my mother worked here before and she had caught mother using her powers to help clean the tavern after a very bloody fight. "I just came to tell you that the fight is not my fault and I tried to get it through their thick skulls that I was not interested," I bluntly stated, not wanting to beat around the metaphorical bush.
She looked at me, "Well it's not your fault dear, you said 'no' and the men didn't listen. Don't worry about it," she said as she stood to walk to her desk. I blinked in confusion, she normally ranted that it wouldn't kill me to actually say 'yes' to the request that many of the drunken sailors made, threaten that she would tell the whole island about my abilities, and say that I used said powers to torture her for extra pay. "Seriously?" I questioned as I wondered why she was actually being so calm.
She nodded in reply, "ofcourse. In fact you don't have to worry about coming in tomorrow or ever again,"she said with a sick smile. I stood with my mouth open, "what? Your firing me? At least give me this week's pay," I said.
She reaches under her desk and grabs a small bag of coins an throws it at my feet. I pick it up slowly, a little uncertain, and look inside to see only half of my normal weekly pay. "This is robbery, I may not please the men like the rest of your crew but while their doing that I'm keeping the others happy with drinks, food, and small talk." She smiles like a Cheshire cat, "And I appreciate that, but I have to pay for the damages that happened after tonight's fight." I glare at her and walk out the door knowing it was futile to argue and not wanting to see that I was pissed.
As I slammed the door I heard her shout, "Oh sweetie, make sure you send back that dress I gave you." She had given me this dress simply because I did not like them, found them useless, and did not own my own. I glared, mostly because I hated her guts, but secretly glad she didn't make me leave it there now and run home in my undergarments. I stomped towards the docks to watch the boats come and go, the water always calming.
I sat there for hours, until I saw a ship pull in, it's black sails guiding it to the docks. A pirate ship I thought. I had always wanted to be free like the sailors who crewed that ship. Free from judgement, responsibility, and full of adventure. Going across the great blue ocean, always seeing new lands and people. I sighed, picking the skirt of my stupidly long dress and walked to my little paddle boat. I knew it was ridiculous, especially since my mother needed help with her potions, elixirs, her garden, and gathering ingredients for spells an things.
I sat in my small boat and started rowing with ease, not in much of a hurry to tell my mother what happened. The only reason I worked there was to have extra money in our pockets, and to pay my family's debt, when mom's elixir orders where slow, which happened only accassionally. I rowed for about 3 hours to our island, humming a little tune my mom taught me, and was ironicly my mysterious father's favorite, according to her. So I rowed on and on...
