Skilar Parks woke up yet again to the familiarly cold room and dusty smell of concrete that she had been accustomed to for months.

Ever so slightly tilting her head upward, Ski groggily rubbed her eyes as if it would cure the little amount of sleep she had gotten.  She looked at the very small, square shaped calendar posted on the compact white cell walls surrounding her, like she did every morning.

She never understood why the council gave their prisoners calendars, it's not like the concept of time was the most important thing for them.  Considering, most of them, would spend the rest of theirs rotting away to then be floated.

Nonetheless, Ski had been counting the days since she had been thrown in there.  The calendar now read September 13; which meant her 18th birthday wasn't far away, but the girl didn't honestly care.

Of course she didn't want to die, but the reality of it was that she was going to.  That realization took her nearly a year to come to terms with, but once she did, it was almost peaceful.

Most people don't know their own fate, everyone dies, but they never know when or why it will happen.  The certainty that she would die on her birthday was reassuring... even if it scared the living shit out of her.

Of course she would never show this fear, not to anyone, ever.  She wouldn't show weakness, it's the one thing people can take advantage of, and that's the only thing that terrified her more.

What she did to get herself thrown in this cell could be seen as justifiable, yes.  It certainly wasn't as bad as some others, she had only stolen some food and clothes when she couldn't afford to get them for herself.

After all, it was quite hard for a 15 year old to juggle 3 jobs and take care of her sick mother while dealing with the emotional damage of her father being floated.

But it wouldn't be seen as that reasonable by Chancellor Jaha or the rest of the council, so she always let her nerves get the best of her.

As she drew herself out of her thoughts, Ski looked away from the calendar and slowly sage up, waking herself over to a small corner where she sat her body curled next to the leg of a table with her back facing the stone cold white wall.
