ROSEMARY POV

"mattheo! i'm going to the alvarez flat!" i yelled, putting on my black sneakers by the door.

"ok, be back by eight." mattheo told me, "oh and please eat something while your there."

mattheo is my older brother, he's eighteen, so only six years older than me. my mother always has to work so my brother looks after me most of the time and let's just say he's quite protective of me.

"yes. yes, i will," i said, shooing him off.

he rolled his eyes and gave me a small wave as i walked out the door to go see my best friend.

i bumped into penelope on my way to her flat, she was carrying many groceries and was struggling to get into the door.

"hey pen, you need some help?" i asked her.

"yes please, sweetie," she said giving me a thankful look as i picked up a few bags.

we walked into her apartment to find alex, face glued to his laptop.

"alex. alex. help." penelope groaned failing to get my best friend's attention.

i rolled my eyes and smacked the back of his head. "real helpful aren't ya." i spoke once he took his headphones off.

"papito let's go, you know i have a bum shoulder."

he picked up one bag, still gripping onto his laptop then sat back down. i looked at him questionably and placed the bags i was holding onto the counter.

"thank you. next time i'll skype you." pen sarcastically spoke.

i sat next to him and peered over his shoulder. he adjusted himself slightly so i could see what he was doing. "you're buying shoes for school?" i murmured. he nodded and began to show me what he was getting.

the curtains behind us swung open and alex's abuelita stepped out. "we have a problem." her accent shone in every word she said.

"i know. the hipsters have discovered porto's. line around the block is like the freakin' apple store now." penelope said flapping her arms about.

"mom!" elena, alex's older sister, yelled.

"and this one, i don't like her anymore." lydia stated pointing to her grandchild.

"i don't care if you like me," elena replied.

"sounds like you're both on the same page." penelope joked.

"your daughter does not want to have a quinces." lydia shamefully said.

"what? why? we already booked the room, and i found a great band! okay, it's a dj. okay, it's your brother with an iPod and a playlist, but it's a very good playlist." pen insisted.

elena huffed "i researched the history of quinceañeras and found out they're totally misogynistic."

lydia groaned and placed a hand on her forehead, "she's been reading again. why do you let her read?"

"i know mami, i let her do math too. i'm a monster." pen said, being sarcastic once again.

"by the way, they made me captain of the debate team today at school, but all she wants to talk about is this." elena told her mother.

"that's great el!" i exclaimed, looking up at the teenager.

elena smiled at me, showing her appreciation

"she has to have a quinces. how else will we know the day that our little girl becomes a woman?" lydia exaggerated.

"you missed it. i was 12, i was in gym and ironically, it happed in first period," elena replied with a smug smile creeping onto her lips.
