I had accompanied the traveller to Watatsumi Island per her Excellency's request via a letter I had got.
In the letter, she told me about her plans to make the traveller the general of a small squad and how a mysterious third-party supporter had appeared out of nowhere and had started to give supplies.
It was suspicious indeed. Especially with the odds against the resistance in pretty much every way. Now, an anonymous patron who is dishing out supplies without a care in the world? I don't trust it.
However, again, the odds are against us all, and we need everything we can get.
I was regretting that thought now because Teppei was as good as dead.
He had aged a lot, and I had seen the traveller rush out in a fit of rage.
Perhaps he knew something we didn't? Or, even better, did he know who the person behind it was?
I sighed heavily as I sat on the crates in front of the now sickly old man who used to be a handsome fellow with nothing but hope.
All I could do now was wait it out and provide as much comfort as I could. However, I definitely was not good at support, so I resorted to just listening to his rants despite the harsh splutters that became more and more prominent as time went on.
"You know... I wish you spoke more... and told us about your experiences."
I raised my eyebrows at this. No one really wanted me to speak according to that menace to society that everyone called the divine Lady Guuji.
"You seem like a r-really interesting person—"
"You're wrong, you know? People like you are always the ones most worth talking about. So, I'm sorry for never putting any effort into making conversation with you."
The man's eyes widened a slight bit before they drooped once more. He donned a lazy smile.
"I-it's fine! Our few... interactions made me happy. Ma-ybe if I... got to train under you... I wouldn't... of... ended up... like this..."
Silence filled the air and with a deep incline of his head, I knew it was over.
Just like that. Another life was gone. Another bright light was snuffed out like it was nothing.
I let out a shaky sigh as I got up from my position, approaching close to the now older man.
I closed his eyes fully with the tips of my fingers gently. He still had his smile on despite such a miserable fate.
I knew what had caused it. I had read in research about the Fatui's schemes, but I had no idea that the resistance had got their hands on them.
Delusions.
A slow and miserable death. A wicked plan devised by the Fatui because they knew how desperate the lower ranks were for power.
I sat down next to him quietly, with closed eyes.
In a way, I was thankful.
The traveller would most definitely make it out. He did survive the Shogun, after all.
'You would've liked to know about my past experiences, hm? No you wouldn't, because if you did, you would never find it in your heart to forgive me, and I understand why. But that's exactly what I'm afraid of.'
