Caesar,

I'm going to tell you this over and over again, but what you're describing to me is the very representation of hell...

On this very day that I am writing to you, I hope with all my heart that you have not yet gone to the front because I am afraid...

I'm afraid of being told you've fallen, afraid of being told you're dead, afraid of hearing it on the radio...

Doesn't your sergeant have the heart to send men who come out of the infirmary into battle? You are still injured in the foot Caesar, you have a slight handicap, you and your friends who were injured compared to the other soldiers.

I want to know you healthy, fit and happy as usual. You and your jokes, you and your crude allusions... I miss that too.

Last week, when I was sewing one of your jackets, your mother came to visit me at home and complained that she hadn't received any letters from you or from your father. She was furious, although I think it was more out of concern than real anger.

If you want to know, as usual, I served her her cup of green tea and then she and I chatted. She asked me if I heard from you, I dodged the subject by answering that no, you will be angry with me and I apologize. But when your mother asked me that, I was stupid and started to think. I thought if I told her I got letters from you and she didn't, she was going to get mad, so I decided not to say anything.

If you haven't gone to the Caesar front yet, I want you to know that I believe in you. You will take your courage in both hands to overcome your fear and your tremors I am sure!

PS : I love you too my Caesar, valiant and courageous trench soldier who will brave the rigors of summer and winter for a long time, with his face covered.
