Carmen's pov:
"Carmen!" Diana yelled in my ear.
I groaned, sitting up in my bed groggily. "What?" I hissed.
My little sister's annoyingly perfect shaped lips curled up into a smile. "You've overslept, it's time to open the stand!"
"Ugh," I sighed, but work was work, and any amount of income was worth it.
We lived in the poor side of Encanto that everyone ignored, or was blissfully unaware of. Even the supposedly 'perfect' Madrigals had failed to come by and help out. The only good thing about the outskirts of town was the jungle behind it. I didn't get to often, but when I could I'd wonder through there. Mamá hated it when I ran off, but I did it for the thrill of the unknown. Encanto was too familiar for my taste.
After Diana left I stumbled out of bed and tied my curly brown into a tight bun on the top of my head. However, I wore a bold red skirt and a white blouse to accent my tanned skin tone.
"Hermana!" I called.
Diana poked her head around the corner. "¿Sí?"
"Get the candies and I'll get the cakes, got it?"
She nodded and we both came into the kitchen. We lived in a small, one story house with just ourMmamá. Our papa died when Diana was just one. He had gotten severely sick with something even Julieta couldn't save. To this day we still don't know what he had caught.
Diana had never been able to get to know her father, but her six year old self wasn't aware of that. Since then Mamá had been struggling to provide for us, so last year when I was fourteen I started making and selling sweets at the stands in the market. I brought Diana with me for both company, and so she wouldn't be left at the house alone all day. Mamá worked three jobs, all of them still not fully making enough for our small family. I plan on finding more work to do when Diana is old enough to be on her own.
I grabbed the two chocolate cakes I had made, and Diana had platters of bagged homemade chocolate. What I sold varied from day to day, and I usually let Diana pick and help me make them.
We walked all the way to the center of town right in front of La Casita. I honestly thought that the house was fascinating, the way that it had its own personality.
We set up at an open stand.
Diana quietly scanned the large tiled opening, bustling with town's people and Madrigals. Luisa was collecting the donkeys again and Isabella was handing a flower bouquet to a grateful old woman.
"Looking for your boyfriend?" I whispered in Diana's ear.
Across the town center I saw Dolores perk up, and glance our way. I found it amusing how nosy she was.
"No!" She denied.
"You sure?" I asked as Antonio walked by. Diana eyeballed him.
"Si." She confirmed, still watching the small boy just her age. She always kept an eye on him, no matter what she said.
"Sure..."
Camilo's pov:
"Hey, Camilo!" Dolores grabbed my arm as I passed by.
"Hmm?"
She pointed behind to me to a stand in the center of town. "Sounds like Antonio has an admirer."
I chuckled evilly. "It's time to work my magic."
I shifted into a middle aged woman and walked over to Antonio. I changed back into my own form.
"Oh Antoniooooooo," I sang.
"Yes?" He asked, curiosity edging his young voice.
"You want some sweets?"
Carmen's pov:
"Oh great." I muttered, nudging Diana and pointing my chin towards the two Madrigal boys.
My little sister sucked in a quick breath, quickly adjusting her hair.
I snorted at the sight. She looked so excited.
I assumed that Dolores told her brother Camilo, I believe his name was. So now he was matchmaking two six year olds.
For the sake of her reaction, I waved over at Dolores. Did I know her? Nope, but she laughed nervously and gingerly waved back.
I turned back to Camilo and Antonio. Camilo changed appearances into Diana, making her giggle. "What'd you like?" She asked.
I was surprised, usually I did the talking.
Camilo pushed his brother forward when he didn't speak. "What do you want hermano?" He returned into his actual form.
The adorably small boy stared at my sister and she watched him carefully.
"Would you guys like a room?" I muttered, but apparently loud enough for Camilo to hear. He glanced at me a laughed. His cheeky grin just reminded me that he was a Madrigal, and he was annoying by default. The only reason I thought better of Dolores was because she had sent Julieta to try and heal my father. I had a kind of respect for her. Her brothers however, I had yet to judge.
I almost jumped when Antonio said, "Would you... like to meet my friends?"
Diana looked to me, asking a silent can I?
I nodded and ruffled her hair "Be back by the time we usually close up, alright?" I told her.
She nodded, and turned to her new boyfriend, whose hair was also being messed up by his older sibling. The brothers high fived and our younger siblings ran off.
Camilo watched them go with an air of pride. "They'd better invite us to the wedding."
I smiled at the joke. "I want their first child to named after me."
He swung around. "Hey no fair! I wanted to call dibs!" He still had that grin on his face.
I shrugged, looking at him daringly. "Too slow. Hmm... Carmen Junior, that has a nice ring to it, don't you think?"
He scoffed. "Please, Camilo Junior sounds so much better."
I rolled my eyes. "How about the thing's just called CJ, it's the same either way."
He took a moment to think about that. "Fine, but only because I can deny that it was ever called Carmen Junior."
"And I will deny that it was ever called Camilo Junior."
He fumed. I laughed at the fact that he was actually getting heated over this. "I'd walk away but that chocolate cake looks too good to leave sitting there. How much for the whole thing?" He dug through his pockets.
I blinked. "Wait, the whole thing?"
He nodded.
"I'm impressed." I admitted, and told him the price.
He payed the entire bill, plus a little more.
I tried to hand it back to him. "This is too much-" He took the cake.
"Keep the change bonita." He held out his free hand. "I'm Camilo, and you are Carmen I take it?"
I shook his hand firmly. "You got it, and thanks."
He winked and grinned. "Anytime." And with that, he skipped off towards the house, Dolores running after him.
