Though I had only seen a small glimpse of her true self, I knew for a fact that there was more to her. I needed to figure out the rest, my main starting point was the reason she came to town. I figured that it had something to do with Olive, but couldn't pinpoint why. With little to no information on their relationship, I got in touch with him and Erin, hoping I'd get a foundation at least. Erin had nothing to tell me, but Olive had a cabinet full. Literally, he had a shelf in his sleeping chamber dedicated to his relationship with Raine.
As far as I was aware, this wasn't a shelf full of happy memories, not at all. He kept letters they had exchanged, books with her fantasies, and more. She was obsessed and couldn't fight it, it was a nightmare. I thought I was lovesick, but I was far from it. Raine Taylor had been visiting the inn daily, not because she was targeting me, but to watch and observe Olive as he slept. She was disgusting and I wanted her gone, for good. I wondered how I would abolish her from this town, but I had no plan. Perhaps I could simply erase any tracks of us, or put her in jail somehow.
I started a journal that described all of her tricks and ways to observe us, which I will share momentarily. For now I had to locate her and try to talk to her directly about her actions. After doing some research, I did exactly that. The Sunday following the last incident, I visited her and sat down for a cup of tea. Whilst there, I questioned how she felt about Olive. To which she replied blankly,
"He's the sun, the moon, and all the stars. I want him to join me, help me, free me from this prison that is reality. It's simple really, he just needs to trust me." her voice got quiet, and the air in the room got cold. She narrowed her eyes at me and grinned.
"He needs to give in to who he truly is, a killer. A cold blooded killer, who won't spare any life unless they're useful." I was astonished, he was nothing of the sort. Was she trying to convince me to leave? Was this her attempt at manipulation?
She set her hand on my shoulder, holding a newspaper report in the other. "See for yourself" she showed me the heading, 'Local teenager burns down house with family inside, and flees the scene.' Of course, that was the night I found him in the woods, his house in embers behind him. But he had to have a plausible reason for that, right? I silently shook my head,
"He had a reason, it wasn't because he's a murderer. He's a wonderful person, and you would understand that, if you ever paid attention to him." Her brows furrowed at me, and the candles that were previously lit in the room, had gone out. Was this her, or was somebody else here with us? To my astonishment, it was in fact her. She had channeled all her stored up energy to create a power surge in the house. This was the first instance of her using her powers, and possibly my last. Or so I thought, I could feel my shoulders pull backwards as my wings swept her out of view.
I shut my eyes and at once I saw Olive's figure, standing in front of the house once more. He was calm and unmoving, he did this on purpose. His eyes were full of tears, and a shock filled expression crawled onto his face. I was brought back to reality when I felt a sharp pain in my chest, it felt like a knife or dagger.
"Nice wings, four eyes!" she said with a grin, "It would be shameful to lose them, don't you think?" she inquired, twisting the blade in a circular motion. I could feel my mouth fill with a metallic taste as her laugh echoed in the background. I was spiraling in and out of consciousness now, and there was nothing I could do to change it. Everything then went black, and I heard her scream in terror as I felt a presence similar to a demon's enter the house. My wings had turned pitch black and burning embers surrounded them. No, they hadn't been burnt, but instead changed. Changed in a sense that I had no more control over them, they moved and acted on their own.
I could no longer hear her screams, it was completely silent and I had no vision. What happened? Where did everything go? That night, I was blind for no apparent reason. Had I changed into a new entity, or an otherworldly creature? Where was Raine and why wasn't she attacking anymore? I pushed all these questions aside as the fire cooled down, and I heard Olive's voice behind me. He was calling out for me, and I couldn't answer. All I could do was mumble a few lousy words, "I'm sorry, I was wrong, let me go" To which I received no response.
Once I recovered from my blindness, I was able to see the mess I had created. Raine was laying on the ground, motionless, but not dead. I had burnt her severely and created multiple bruises along her back. I felt like a monster, perhaps I was one. I had lost control and let my emotions give in. I was the villain here, nothing compared to her. I didn't mean to do any of this, I thought to myself. But there was one thing I did mean to do, shut her up for good.
Her mouth had been burnt so badly that she was unable to talk after her recovery. I thought of this as a victory on my behalf. Once she returned back to her work, and her boss learned that she was of no use, she was fired immediately, and for the better.
