As they walked through the cathedral, neither of them said a word to the other. Eventually, Raxyas breaks the silence.
Raxyas: ... You could have delivered some of those reports in person, you know.
Xayn: What are you talking about?
Raxyas: The reports you made back then, when I was fighting against the Thirteen. Without them, my battles would have been much harder. I'm thankful for them, but... Couldn't you have dropped by sometime to give them to me personally?
Xayn: I was busy, Raxyas... There was much to read.
Raxyas: Right.
They left through the cathedral's doors and walked silently toward the outskirts of town, this time without the stabbing looks of disapproval from the residents of Halgorth. The streets were empty, as was customary after a summoning to the cathedral.
Xayn: I've been meaning to ask you... How is it past this plane? Did you catch some sort of glimpse of your next life?
Raxyas: I... Couldn't quite get there.
Xayn: How so...? You were gone for years, surely you must have seen something!
Raxyas: Oh, many things... My whole life, and unlife too. All of it flashed before my very eyes. But that was only the beginning. Everything is a bit of a blur after that but... I think there was nothing there. It did not feel like salvation or anything of the sort.
Xayn: Then what did it feel like...?
Raxyas: Honestly? It kind of felt like damnation as we know it.
Xayn: Damnation, you say? Interesting...
Raxyas: Interesting? I find it mortifying! That was supposed to be my ticket out of here, and it felt like I was getting locked up in a cage of infinite nothingness...
Xayn: Za would not do such a thing to us, Raxyas. You know him.
Raxyas: I do! And I don't think he would do it voluntarily. Maybe he does not know what salvation is truly like. Look, I don't really know what I saw... My memory is still hazy from then. Like I woke up abruptly from a dream. Why do you figure that might be, huh Xayn?
He looks at Xayn, squinting. Xayn smiles.
Xayn: No idea! Wonder why you might be feeling like that...
Raxyas: Yeah! Thanks a lot, couldn't ask for a better alarm clock.
There was a brief moment of silence between them, as they continued walking. Then, Xayn speaks.
Xayn: Raxyas... I'm sorry that I didn't drop by back then. I know I should have.
Raxyas: It's alright. At the end of the day, we'd rather do the things that offer us the least resistance, right? I know you're not the type to reach out. I know you prefer books to people. But...
