Chapter Ten... When I See Him, I See Red...
I sat at the doctors again the following afternoon, nervously awaiting my test results. Ally sat with me in silence, but Vicki had a book report due so she couldn't skip school like we could. I was bound to be in trouble when I got home, but I'd told mom about my possible problem, and she promised to keep it quiet. I could see the disappointment in her eyes when I'd admitted to not always using condoms, but I ignored it.
When my name was called, my whole body stiffened.
"Come on, Katie," Ally said quietly. "I'm here to help you through it."
"Thanks," I breathed, slowly standing up.
The nurse led us to the same room I'd been in the other day. I took a seat on the same chair, and Ally sat down on the bed.
The doctor entered, smiling.
"Hello, Kaitlin," she smiled. "And your friend is back again."
"Hi," Ally muttered.
"Hello," I replied nervously.
"Well, I have your test results," she began. I felt my stomach start to do backflips.
"And?" I said hesitantly.
"You don't have syphillis," she confirmed. "But sometimes it's not detectable early on, so in six weeks I'd like to test you again."
"Okay," I said, sighing in relief. "So I'm totally fine?"
"You are," she smiled. "But... have you ever had a pap smear?"
"No," I replied.
"Okay, well I didn't think so," she sighed.
"Is there... something wrong?" I asked.
"Oh, no," she said firmly. "It's just a routine thing. We have to ask."
"So... there's nothing wrong with me then?" I asked again.
"No, you're fine," she smiled. "But I do wanna do the pap smear, if you don't mind."
"My cue to leave," Ally smiled weakly, and I frowned at the doctor but agreed.

"I know why women avoid them now!" I groaned as we left the doctors'. "She asked me if I'd ever been pregnant, or had any children or miscarriages... then she asked how long I'd been sexually active, how long I'd been on the pill... if I'd had any side effects of taking the pill.... she asked pretty much about my whole sexual history!"
"She knows that you've only ever been with James now, then?" Ally laughed.
"Oh, she knows..." I said bitterly.
"Oh, well at least you have another two years before you have to have another pap," she giggled. "They're horrible, aren't they?"
"Who invented them?" I asked, sighing. "Then she told me that I'd definitely have to return in six weeks for a repeat test! Apparently putting it all behind me just isn't gonna happen."
