Chapter Twelve... Hurting

I awoke on the gurney as I was being loaded into the back of an ambulance. Mia was in handcuffs, as was another girl from her squad. The other cheerleaders all stood around in amazement, and Ashlee was at my side.

"Katie," she breathed. "Thank God."

"My head hurts," I groaned.

"That Swordfish bitch Nicola threw a rock at your head," she explained. "And got arrested. And... you need stitches."

"Damn," I sighed.

"Mia got arrested for drug possession!" Ashlee giggled. "Can you believe it?! She's also gotten thrown off of her squad!"

"And I didn't have to do anything to her!" I stated. "Ow! Thinking hurts..."

"Your friends Ally and Vicki are gonna meet you at the hospital," she smiled. "They're proud of you... you didn't throw the first punch!"

"I'm sure my parents would be proud, too," I chuckled.

Ashlee went and gave a statement to the police as I was taken to the hospital. After head CT scans, an MRI, seeing two doctors, having five stitches in the back of my head, and two on my face, and seeing a plastic surgeon who assured my face would heal completely, I was free to go home.

"I need painkillers," I groaned as mom helped me settle into bed.

"You need to rest, Katie," mom smiled.

"That bitch is going down..." I muttered.

"She's in more trouble with the police than you," mom said wearily. "And the fact that you didn't hit her first? That surprised me."

"Her dirty skank of a friend threw a rock at my head!" I said loudly. "Who does that?!"

"Was that when you hit her?"

"Yeah... but still. It could have killed me, if it hit me in the right spot."

"You're alright, baby. Now, sleep. You'll be better in the morning."

"Thanks, mom," I smiled brightly at her.

"You will," mom grinned as she left the room.

I laid down, ready to sleep, closing my eyes. I was just about to drift into a deep sleep when a loud knock at my bedroom window. I reluctantly got out of my comfy bed and walked over to the window, pulling the curtains open.

James was on the other side.

I opened the window, and the chilly night air hit my face. I felt a bit light-headed, so I left the window opened and walked over to my bed.

"Are you letting me in?" he asked.

"Whatever," I sighed.

"You don't wanna know what I'm doing here?" he questioned.

"I'm sure you're gonna tell me anyway," I muttered, laying down. "But make it quick. Some bitch threw a rock at my head, and I have a splitting headache."

"I heard about Nicola and Mia," he said softly. "Russell's sister Gina is on your squad."

"Oh," I said, surprised. "I didn't know that she was his sister. She's a junior..."
