I've seen many fanfics on this site and other sites
And one thing I like looking at in fanfics (and fanart) of any fandom is the OCs- short for original characters- people come up with
Most of the time, the larger the fandom, the more OCs there will be. I say most of the time cuz for some reason there's barely any MCU OCs, despite it being a super popular franchise that's made more money than the entire population of this planet lol (Above 20 billion in box office money if I remember correctly)
Star Darlings does have OCs.. there just isn't many of them, and most of them follow the same pattern of "The 13th Star Darling"
Ophelia: "Guess I don't exist then-"
It is not required to make your OC an SD lol. They can just be a close friend, or an enemy, or be part of their own group. I personally think the SDs should remain a 12-13 member group, since their based off the 12 zodiac signs (Ophelia being based off the maybe 13th sign Ophiuchus)
Since I want there to be more good SD OCs out there, I give you this tutorial!
You don't have to start with a name for your OC. You could just make up their appearance or personality first. But let's start with names since it's relatively easy
The naming motifs in Star Darlings vary. Obviously since the SDs are the zodiacs their names are based off that (Ex. Libby = Libra. Leona = Leo. Piper = Pisces) you could do something similar and give your OC a name based off a constellation, like Cygnus = Cynthia. (Professor Elara Ursa's name is derived from the Ursa Major/Minor constellations) You could name them after a star (there's one named Rigel, one named Antares, to name a couple) as well
Latin/Greek names are also acceptable. Stella literally means star. The name Astra has a Greek origin if I remember correctly lol. As long as it has an astral vibe it's ok. Some other examples from the books are Mira, Gloryah, Violetta, Aerabelle, Indirra, Miles, Andromedus, and Kiri (Lilibelle)
Of course, you could just give your OC a name like Julia, Melanie, Lucas, Evan, etc. as long as it fits your character!
Next is appearance. It's best to start with a signature color for them. The SDs all have their own, while the non-SDs have a few more different hues, but have one certain color that's focused on. Preferably you should go with colors that no regular kid would be born with as hair/eye colors, like cyan, crimson, fuchsia, etc.
Now for their Starland outfit. The fashion that Starlings wear isn't really defined. They have dresses, shirts, pants, skirts, fringe boots, flats, ankle boots, headpieces, sweaters, all that. I'm a big fashion person but there isn't really a 'signature' to Starland fashion. Most of it though have parts of it that glow and shine, and pretty much all of their clothing has a star on it somewhere
The clothing (and hairstyle!) your OC will have will probably end up being based on their personality or your personal preferences, likely a mix of both. If your into aesthetic subculture, you probably have heard of various fashion/aesthetic styles such as fairy kei, e-girl/boy, soft girl/boy, dark academia, cottagecore, the like. If you feel like any of those styles will fit your OC, you could 'starland-ify' it by incorporating celestial motifs in the design, sparkly parts, and star motifs. The aesthetics fandom wiki has a very large list of aesthetics with fashion styles that you can look at and decide from!
At this point you should decide on your character's wish pendant. The SDs all have jewelry/accessories as wish pendants, like necklaces, earrings, cuffs, bracelets, brooches, glasses. Bows, hairpins, anklets and rings can also work, as well as wristbands. Anything that is an accessory basically can be a wish pendant. If you want to get more creative, you could make their wish pendant something like a keychain, a compact of some kind, or any other accessory that isn't really worn but you could put in your pocket
Now we need to come up with their appearance when disguised on Wishworld. All the SDs and wish granters gain normal hair and eye colors in their wishling forms, so your OC should follow suit. The SDs also gain a streak of their sparkly starling hair. It hasn't been confirmed whether it's exclusive to them so I don't care if your OC also has a hair streak lol
Wishworld fashion isn't too different from coming up with their starling outfit, you just need to make it more 'down-to-earth', with some natural colors thrown in. Look at the outfits of the SDs for examples, and yes lol since Wishworld is just Earth any reasonably normal fashion in real life can work
Before we go onto personality, you should decide whether your OC is also a student at Starling Academy or somewhere else, such as Star Prep. If your character isn't a student you can skip (Welp if their staff member then some stuff still applies lol) if your character is a girl and you want them to interact regularly with the SDs, they should go to the all-girl school Starling Academy. If boy, Star Prep. If they aren't a boy or a girl, you can choose! You can also make up a whole school for them to go, or choose one of the mentioned ones in the books like Solar School
Next, personality! I don't have much to say here. Just go with what feels right, but also try to differentiate them from the canon characters and give them flaws. Take inspiration from your favorite characters or people you know if you need to
Similar thing for backstory. The SDs all have relatively lowkey backstories, except for Cassie's who's backstory is the most traumatic. You can give your OC a darker backstory, just make sure it fits in the world of Starland one way or another. While your at it, decide your character's hometown- Starland City, Kaleidoscope City, New Prism, Solar Springs, etc.
Now all that's left is their power crystal and wish blossom. For the blossom you can look at actual flowers, and try to give it a fantasy twist based on what your character is associated with. For the power crystal do the same thing with actual gemstones. I also forgot all the SDs have a signature power for wish missions- what's the power of your OC? Don't make it too OP pls lol. The SDs also have wish symbols (usually appear in episodes) that appear on the wish orbs, come up with one for your character. And a mirror mantra, usually something inspirational to say when they need a bit more positivity on their wish mission
As a bonus you can also figure out the character's relationships with the canon characters, but this isn't required. And yes, that's all the tips I have for making a Star Darlings OC!
An OC template if you need it (if your gonna fill it out do it in 1 comment pls, and no this isn't suddenly a roleplay lol)
