Weeks went by and Emily was getting weaker. I had slowly been moving into her house since she was leaving it to me when the inevitable happened. We both tried to stay as optimistic as possible. The doctors gave her 2 weeks to a month until it over took her body.
"Who do you want at your funeral?" I asked with a laugh trying not to cry
"Well you, James then a few of my other friends and.." she trailed off at the end
"And who?"
"Well, I sort of know who James father is and he knows about him and I and what's happening so I think he could be there"
This was a shock. The whole pregnancy she had claimed she didn't know who it could be. She had decided when she got cancer she was sleep around until she couldn't anymore. Then she got pregnant.
I didn't know what to tell her.
"Can I meet him?"———————————————————————————
I pulled into the driveway and saw a red truck sitting in the driveway. I grabbed James from the back seat and walked in. Emily was in the kitchen in her wheelchair, we converted the garage to a room for her to live our her days. She was making coffee with a tall muscular man. They were laughing and having fun, I just stood there for a minute watching. Loving seeing Emily laughing.
James started fussing and my cover was blown.
"Hey guys, I'm gunna put James down for his nap. Then I'll be down"
"Here I can put him down you've had him all day" he said and walked towards me
"May this is Ian, Ian May"
We exchanged awkward hi hellos and he took James from me and disappeared upstairs.
I walked over to the counter and helped her finishing making coffee. We went into the living room and sat in silence until he made his way back downstairs.
"So, I have something we need to talk about." Emily told us abruptly, looking at the floor while she spoke
"When James was born, May was put as his guardian if anything was to happen. But now that Ian is in his life now we need to figure out how this is going to work"
I was searching her face to see who she was trying to break the news to. We sat in silence for a minute until Ian said "I definitely want to be in his life. I can't think about him growing up without his mom and not knowing who his dad is"
That makes sense, "I think we could do a shared custody thing without going to court or anything I think we could work it out" I said and saw a wave of relief wash over EmIan lived a few hours away so he only came and saw James a couple days a week. He was nice and stepped into the dad role really quickly. I work from home so it wasn't a big deal if Ian couldn't make it to see James. Em was still feeling the same in the few weeks after Ian started coming. Then one night she went downhill...
