Holly's Leaf yawned and stretched, waking up slowly, sleepily.

Her black pelt shone in the sunlight as she sat up, noticing the dawn's light spill in and warm her. She turned to glance at the other young cats in the softpaw den, narrowing her green eyes as she searched for someone else that was awake.

The first one. Fish Leap. A friendly young dark brown tabby tom, son of Dawn River. She dismissed him lightly - he was asleep . He was a nice enough cat, but Holly's Leaf had never really spoken to him much.

Then there was her sister, Dove's Wing, and her brother, Jay's Wing. She watched their chests rise and fall. Asleep. Great.

She noted that they were in separate corners of the den. Had they argued? Then Holly's Leaf also noticed that Half Moon lay curled beside Jayfeather, almost close enough for their pelts to touch.

Wow, what a surprise, Holly's Leaf thought, unable to let a burst of sarcasm enter her thoughts. It was pretty obvious Half Moon liked Jay's Wing - ahem. It was actually more to the point that she was in love with him, but played it down much more than she showed.

Honestly, Holly's Leaf thought, rolling her eyes as she started to groom her fur. I think the only cat that doesn't know Half Moon's in love with Jay's Wing is Jay's Wing himself!

She tugged a burr from her tangled fur, then realized that there was one more cat she hasn't noticed. She turned around, and met the gleaming green eyes of Fallen Leaves.

"Hey," Fallen Leaves said, purring mischievously at her. "Just woke up, huh?"

Holly's Leaf blood flame, and she quickly stared at her paws. "Obviously," she muttered. She never understood how Fallen Leaves could always make her feel embarrassed so easily. Just how?

Fallen Leaves flashed in front of her in a ginger and white blur, and then he was standing right at her shoulder. He gave her fur a quick lick, and Holly's Leaf froze.

Oh my stars, she thought as he eased out another burr.

He spat it out, dumping it on the ground, then let out a mrrow of amusement at her expression. Holly's Leaf could only imagine what she looked like. "You might as well thank me, you ungrateful furball."

Does he think I'm stupid? Why did he do that? Why is he different? His touch. He's special. He -

"Um, hello!" Fallen Leaves gave her a playful shove, and Holly's Leaf nearly tripped over from the electric shock that went through her, that he clearly didn't feel. He gave her another weird look that made her thoughts spin again.

Holly's Leaf blinked sharply, forcing herself back to reality. "Thank you," she meowed finally, trying to sound proud and dismissive, but Fallen Leaves just purred with laughter. She huffed. Was everything she did a joke to him?

"It's my last day as a softpaw today," he said, staring out at the lake. Oh, now he was the distracted one. Nice.

Holly's Leaf nodded, forcing down the quiver of anxiety building up inside her. "Good luck." Don't some cats never get out of tunnels, though?

"That's it?" Fallen Leaves nudged her, his green gaze wide and innocent. "I'm offended."

"Oh, be quiet." Holly's Leaf walked out of the den, calling behind her, "Wake up! It's Fallen Leaves' last day! Jay's Wing, get up!"
