"It's been a while since we've last talked, hasn't it?" Chris asked, as he lit his last cigarette, and sat down on the bench at the bus station. He reached over towards the ashtray to put out the cigarette, and then continued his conversation over the phone.
"I just want to know when you're coming back home." A concerned woman's voice replied on the other end. "This is my new home, Ash." Chris told the woman. "I know we haven't seen each other for a long time, but it's only been two months since I moved here. And honestly, I quite like it."
Chris took the time to focus his gaze around the town buildings, the people walking by, and the cars sliding through the streets. "I mean... it's not like anything weird has happened in this town." Chris added.
Ashley let out a little sigh of disappointment, wishing her ex-boyfriend would come back to reconnect. "I know, I know. It's just that... things feel very different when you're not around."
Chris nodded and said, "Yeah, I understand. But you know you can always come down to see me for a bit right?"
"That's true, but YOU know you can come back for a vacation to see me, right?" Ashley playfully responded. Chris gave out a small chuckle and said, "Yeah, no doubt about that."
Chris looked over to the side and saw the bus coming over towards his stop. "Hey, I'm gonna get off right now. My bus is about to pick me up." Chris told Ashley, as he stood up from the bench, grabbed his bag to put it over his shoulder, and walked a couple feet towards the street.
"When do you think we'll talk again?" Asked Ashley.
"To be honest? I'm not really sure. My schedule has been pretty hectic lately." Chris responded, with a tone of sentiment towards Ash. "But I'll let you know when I'm available, okay?"
Ashley said, "Sounds good. You stay safe out there, alright?" Chris gave out a little smile and replied, "You do the same. Make sure you keep an eye on those creeps, and don't let them bother you."
"Oh Chris, you KNOW I'm not gonna let them do anything to me." Ashley said sternly. Chris let out another chuckle and responded, "Alright, I'll talk to you later. Bye."
Chris hung up the phone. The bus stopped right next to Chris' stop, and the bus driver opened the door. "Route from Greensboro Road to Roosevelt Street!" The bus driver yelled. Chris walked up the stairs and showed the bus driver his bus pass. The bus driver gave a gesture, pointing to the seats with his thumb and told Chris, "You're good to go." Chris then walked down the isles, sat down at a seat near the back, scooted over to the window, and put his bag underneath the seat. As soon as Chris sat down, a sense of comfort thrived through his body. "Finally alone. And there's not too many people on the bus to bother me." Chris thought.
He then put on his headphones, and turned his music on. Curiously, Chris checked the time on his phone, "3:12 PM" it read. "Prefect." Chris thought. "Just in time to make it home." He looked out the window for a brief moment until he felt a thud right next to him on his seat, almost as if someone had sat next to him.
He looked over to the side and saw a tall, young bald man in a long blue shirt, sleeveless rolled up with a black sleeveless hoodie, and black pants and shoes. An expression of confusion ran on Chris' face, as he put his headphones down. The man looked over at Chris, as his expression immediately perked up with surprise, and asked, "Oh, I'm sorry. Did you want me to sit somewhere else? I can do that if you want."
"No, it's okay. I don't mind." Chris said, as he put his headphones back on. Another brief moment has passed, as Chris feels a tap on his shoulder. He looked over to the man next to him to once again, put his headphones down.
"I just want to say... Thank you for your service. Really, I respect what you guys do." The man told Chris. Chris nodded with a smile and said, "I appreciate your support, brother."
