"I am waiting for the day, you will ever be on time for anything! you have no sense of punctuality Trish! Ali will be here any moment from now" my mom yelled, "I'll be out in five ma" I hollered back, dragging out a duffel bag containing all of our wordly possessions outside, which is not much to start with.
I stopped by my room, leaving everything you have ever known behind for something new, requires a lot, in my case it was a bit of closure, drinking in the image of our room one last time, a room I shared with three of my siblings before they all moved out for one reason or the other.
Our room contained 2 medium sized worn out bunk beds, a wardrobe, and a dead beat sofa passed down from our grandma, stickers, dirty posters and scribbles on the wall, a tell tale of what the room has been through and the memories it held, God knows I'll miss this place.Moving out to search for greener pastures as my mom likes to put it, wasn't a day's decision, it was as a result of a long chain of events, of which the last stroke that broke the camel's back was when my dad made the decision to bring in yet another woman into our lives knowing fully well he could barely afford basic necessities for us.
It was the reality slap my mum needed to muster the courage to leave our dad, to go out and make something for herself and to actually start living instead of just existing.
My dad isn't entirely a bad person, or so I like to think, he is just a man who has made many bad decisions and has allowed his believes and backward thinking get the best of him, I disliked him for the most part of my youth, a part of me will never forgive him for being selfish and self centered.I snapped out of that lane of thought, when I heard a car honking outside, that must be Mr Ali, I ran outside before my mum could call out for me again, Ali offered to give us a ride to the park and mama will have my neck if we miss it.
"good morning mr Ali" I said to him while opening the door to the back seat of his old Toyota, "how are you doing trish?" He asked "I'm fine sir" I responded, "heard you guys are leaving" he directed at my mum, nosey lots! I muttered to myself, news travels fast in Noak city, it's a small town, I won't be surprised if he knows what goes on in everyone's house, his wife mercy is the greatest gossip in our little town, if you ever want to make something known, all you need to do is make sure mercy gets a wind of it and wait patiently for your job to be done, the local news got nothing on her.
"when are you coming back?" mr Ali proceeded to ask my mum, I guess when you spend time with someone their habits start to rub off on you, "you know school is still in session, and I don't think you shouId take her along with you, they'll be taking their final exams soon" he added.
It was my decision to follow my mum, I wouldn't be able to take the exam even if I stay, because we can't afford it. College is a dream I have bookmarked, I'll rather brave whatever comes with her than stay back with my dad and his new family.Lost in thought, I could still hear Mr Ali and my mum conversing faintly, till we got to the park, we got there just in time to find the bus ready to hit the road, we bade mr Ali farewell and got in the bus, i sat at the window side beside my mum looking outside as we zoomed off into the distance and unknown.
