~ring ring ring!!~ the alarm went off, I jolted awake and stretched out my arm to turn off the annoying clock, oh how much I hate waking up to the sound of the alarm! I lamented.
I stoop up, before I succumb to the lull of sleep again, after staring out the window for what felt like 10 minutes, I mustered the energy to take my bath, prepare our bag and tidy up the store room just in time an early breakfast, our last breakfast with aunt Alice.
After the early breakfast Alice accompanied us to the park, where we took a bus headed for Sal city.
we endured eights hours on the bus and arrived at the final stop on the outskirt of Sag city, how we were going to navigate our way to aunt Mary's house was the only thing on my mind as we walked towards the opposite section of the park to get a cab.
I won't lie, we looked out of place, I am sure the cabbies would be able to tell too, if they aren't certain, they will definitely be the moment we open our mouths.
I'm sure some of the cabbies were already grinning in 'helping a first timer'"Where to ma'am?" Three cab men dashed towards us, as if they were in a bid to see who gets to us first, "calm down! we only need one" mama said, if the cab men heard mama at all, then whatever she said probably went in one ear and went out the other ear, they marched on, dedicated to get a piece of us, I grabbed on to my bag and clutched mama's arm tightly, two of them grabbed on to mama's arm each, dragging her left and right like a rag doll "if you guys don't unhand me this instance I'll show you guys crazy!" Mama roared furiously, from the dead ass look on mama's face they realized she was serious, they let go of us and gave us space, mama eyed them critically and walked towards the fourth cab man, a tall lanky guy who didn't rush in to get a piece of us, "I'm going to the address here" mama said passing the paper to the tall cab man, "i know this place, but it's kind of far," mama looked at him, "it's going to cost 70 las" he added, mama stared at him till he was uncomfortable, before she said "I'll give you 20 las" the shock on the man's face was comical, I moved back a bit knowing fully well that mama was going to haggle till he gives up, the man insisted, but mama held her ground and she ended up settling for half the initial price (35 las) leaving him no choice, "I don't have all the time in the world, get in let's go" he said defeated, we got in and mama tried engaging the tall man in small talks, he was hesitant at first but he loosened up on the way, they talked about life in Sal city and mama asked quite a number of questions centered around 'beginners guide' in Sal city for the most part of the ride.
They continued, until he dropped us off at the front of an old duplex that might have been around for a few decades, in a shabby looking estate with worn out apartments and buildings that looked like they were in a serious need of renovation, looking at the house number on the piece of paper we had, confirmed that we were indeed in front of aunt Mary's place. We walked towards the door, mama in front and me behind her, I held my breath as she knocked on the door.
