Luci breathed in sharply. "Yeah, yeah I guess we should."
When they arrived at the hospital Damian walked up to the receptionist and spoke to her quietly. She gave him a sympathetic look before nodding her head. Damian motioned for them to follow him. She and Akira followed him obediently.
As they approached the door a man in blue/green scrubs walked out quickly, almost running into Akira. "May we go see her?" Akira questioned. "Family members only." He answered gruffly. Damian glared at the man, before opening his mouth so speak. Luci flinched. She knew he was going to yell.
Before he did, Akira put her hand on his arm. He looked down at her. "Damian, it's okay, I'll wait in lounge." Then she walked away. Luci swallowed. She did not want to be alone with her brother. She was terrified."I guess it's just us." Damian said. "Yeah, just us." Luci echoed. They walked into the room, and Luci gasped audibly.
Her mother was pale. So damn pale. She was skinny too. Luci could see her bones peaking through her skin.
Luci turned around, seething. "What the fuck! You said she was fine. You told me she was going to her therapists. You fucking said she was recovering! Now, NOW SHE'S ON HER DEATH BED BECAUSE YOU COULDN'T FUCKING CHECK UP ON HER TO MAKE SURE SHE WAS EATING?!" Luci's hands fell limply to her sides. It was her fault too. "Sorry." She mumbled to Damian. How could she have let this happened?
Stupid, Stupid!
She should have known better. Damian was a self centered prick. Gods she hated him, so fucking much right now.
Tears fell from her eyes. She had never cried to much in such little time before. Luci closed her eyes and remembered when she first found out about her mother's eating disorder.
**Flashback**
Luci walked in the house happily. Today had been the last day of grade nine. Even better, Alexander - the boy she had a crush on - asked her out. She couldn't wait for their first date. And she had ended the school year with straight A's. 97's or above.
"Mom! Guess what?!" She shouted, only to be greeted by complete silence.
That was odd.
Luci shrugged it off and walked into the bathroom. There she found her mother passed out on the floor. Her mom was naked and Luci could see her bones through her mother's skin. Her ribs and hips her sickeningly defined.
Luci gasped covering her mouth, tears cascading down her face. She knew what happened. She couldn't believe that her mother would do this to herself. He beautiful mother. Luci could feel her body go numb. How could she not have known. Ever since their dad had left them, her mother had acted strange.
Damian wasn't home, he wouldn't be for a while. Luci rushed to the phone.
She dialed 911.
"Hello, what is your emergency?" A pleasant voice asked. Luci began to cry. "My mom, she- she's passed out on the bathroom floor, anorexia." Luci sobbed. "I need you to take a deep breath." The woman said calmly. "Tell me your location.
Luci obliged and soon she could hear an ambulance outside. She heard banging on the door and rushed to open it for them. They came inside her house. Just rushed in. "Where is she?" They asked her.
"The bathroom. Just laying there. Is she dead. Please don't let her die. "The bathroom floor. Naked. She was so pretty. Why would she do that. I don't understand. Please sir, PLEASE DON'T LET HER DIE." Luci mumbled incoherently before passing out.
**Present**
"Mom, I'm sorry. Please wake up. I need you." Luci looked down, sighing sadly. Just then the heartbeat monitor began to beep. It was no longer a steady pace.
Loud, fast, pounding inside of her head.
Incessantly. Beep. Beep. Beep beep. Beepbeepbeepbeepbeepbeepbeepbeep.
Then silence.
Doctors and nurses rushed in, ushering her out. Everything felt muted. Luci knew. She knew. Her mom was dead. Gone. Her mother's demons had succeeded in dragging her six feet down.
