Law and the Lawbreakers

Chapter 5

"Haha," someone on deck laughed. "Those fucking pirates stole our fruit but we have their ship!" Law didn't recognize the voice, and when he peeked his head up to check if it was Shanks and his crew he didn't recognize anyone. He ducked back down and grabbed Artemis from her room, locking the both of them in the infirmary with Lammy.

"Law?" Artemis asked. He gestured for her to be quiet. "What's wrong?" she whispered.

"There's somebody upstairs," Law whispered back.

"Daddy?" Artemis asked.

"No, not your dad. I think they're the pirates who had the Op Op Fruit before."

"Bad pirates?"

"Yeah, bad pirates. We're gonna stay in here with Lammy until your dad comes back, okay?"

"Okay." Artemis wiggled out of Law's arms and climbed onto her chair next to Lammy's bed. In the few months since they first picked up the pair, Artemis and Law had each claimed a chair next to Lammy's bed. Law stayed by the door, listening to tell if the pirates were coming downstairs.

"Lammy," Artemis whispered to the brunette.

"Hi, Arty," Lammy whispered back.

"Hi, Lammy."

"How are you?"

Artemis smiled. "Good." Then, as if she realized something, she frowned and pointed towards the ceiling. "Bad pirates upstairs."

"Don't worry, Lammy, I'm sure Shanks will be back soon with the fruit. We can still save you."

Lammy smiled. "Thank you, Law." She coughed.

"Lammy okay?"

"I'm okay, Artemis."

There was a crash above them, and Law gestured for everyone to be quiet again. There were a few more loud 'bang's that sounded like gunshots, then heavy footsteps rushing down the stairs. Artemis held Lammy's hand tightly as Law stayed by the door, double checking the lock.

The handle jiggled and then someone pounded on the door. "Lammy? Law are you in there?"

"Lucky?"

"Law! Are you okay? Do you have Artemis?"

"Yeah. Is everyone else gone?"

"It's just me and Yasopp. We kicked everyone else off."

Law cracked the door open. "What about Shanks and Benn?"

"They're still on the island; we're sailing back to get them now. Can I check on the girls?"

Law nodded and opened the door. Artemis ran up to her uncle and Lucky picked her up, situating her on his shoulder. She threw her hands up in celebration.

"Be careful, kid, I don't want you to fall," Lucky said, glancing up at Artemis.

She dropped her arms and held onto his hand instead, still smiling widely. "Okay."

"What about you, Lammy? You okay, kid?"

"Mhm," she nodded weakly.

"Good. We got the Op Op Fruit for you, so you'll be up and running around in a couple weeks, I know it."

Lammy smiled at him and Lucky smiled back.

"Alright, Law and Artemis, you two are with me," Lucky declared. Artemis cheered and Law followed behind them, waving goodbye to his sister.

They went to Artemis's room, where Lucky let Artemis down from his shoulder and left her to play. She went to grab Law's hand but Lucky stopped her. "I have to talk to him for a second, okay, Arty? I promise when we're done he can come play with you, but for now can you play by yourself?"

Artemis glanced at Law, who nodded. "I'll come in when we're done, okay?"

"Okay, Law." Artemis went into her room and started playing with a mini kitchen they'd gotten from an island a few months ago.

Lucky led Law a little ways down the hallway so Artemis couldn't hear them. "Okay, the good news is that we got the fruit."

"What's the bad news?" Law asked.

"The bad news is that Shanks got shot. He's still alive, don't worry, Benn's taking care of him but I don't want Artemis to be in the infirmary while he's there until he's patched up. Can you take care of her until then?"

"What about Lammy?"

"She'll still be fine in there. Right now Shanks has the fruit but I'll try and get it to you before he goes in so you can figure out how to use it. Some devil fruits like that can be kind of confusing but you have about 2 weeks to get the hang of it."

"Alright. I'll take care of Artemis and practise using the fruit while Shanks is in the infirmary, but she'll probably want to see him."

"She can see him when he's patched up."

"Okay."

"Lucky! We're here!" Yasopp called from on deck.

"I gotta go, kid. Thanks for looking after Arty for us."

"Sure."

Lucky ran upstairs and Law went back to Artemis's room, closing the door behind him.
