(Y/n's POV)
As people conversed about their costumes, I clung to Katsuki's back. What Katsuki affectionately called 'an idiot backpack' was my second favorite way of clinging to him.
"Now that you're ready, it's time for combat training."
"Sir. This is the fake city from our entrance exam. Does that mean we'll be conducting urban battles again?" Iida asked from under a heavily armored suit.
"Not quite! I'm going to move you two steps ahead. Most of the villain fights you see on the news take place outside. However, statistically speaking, run-ins with the most dastardly evildoers take place indoors. Think about it! Backroom deals, home invasions, secret underground lairs. Truly intelligent criminals stay hidden in the shadows. For this training exercise, you'll be split into teams of good guys and bad guys and fight two-on-two indoor battles."
I blinked, and in a split second of strategy, I took care to memorize everyone's life flames, that way I could find them all and know who it was later.
"Isn't that a little advanced?" Tsu asked.
"The best training is what you get on the battlefield!" All Might responded. More questions were asked, irking All Might, seeing as how he wasn't finished. As much as I lived the dude, I wasn't one for long speeches.
Then, All Might explained what we would be doing. Finally, after giving us the debriefing, he split us up into teams of two.
I ended up on Team D, then glanced at Katsuki's slip of paper. "Aww, look! We're together! It's like fate or something!"
"I call bullshit." Katsuki scoffed, smirking at me. "No way fate is this kind to us after all this time." Either way, he seemed glad that someone who he worked well with was on his team. "Get that life flame sensing ability ready, Candles, we're going to need that."
"Got it, Boss!" I smiled.
"I declare that the first teams to fight will be... THESE GUYS!!!" All Might held up two balls, one labeled 'D' and the other labeled 'A'. I felt my heart drop as I remembered who was on Team A. Deku. Fuck.
Katsuki glared at Deku, and I slipped off of his back and latched onto his arm. Deku trembled, then steeled his nerves and glared back, making Katsuki growl. I tugged on his arm, frowning. "C'mon, we've got five minutes to prepare." Katsuki glanced at me, then walked rather angrily inside the building, with me trailing behind him.
While All Might have us our instructions, Katsuki continued to glare. When we arrived at the weapon, he finally spoke up. "Hey, Candles. Do you really think Deku has a Quirk?"
"I dunno... I mean, you saw how he threw that ball, but... He's supposed to be Quirkless. And now..." I stared at the ground, reaching out for Deku's life flame. It was bigger than it used to be, and sparkling with new power. I frowned deeper, sneaking a glance at Katsuki. He looked utterly manic. "Katsuki, please remember this is training-"
"Shut it, Candles! I've got Nerd Mincemeat to make." He brushed me off, making me flinch. I bit my lip and looked away. Katsuki hardly ever dismissed me like that, so that meant he really had tunnel vision right now. I rubbed my arms and sighed. Our time was up.
As soon as the time started, I closed my eyes and sensed for their life flames. "Katsuki. Second floor, west side. Can you find them with that."
"Guard the damn weapon, I'll get that stupid nerd myself!" He shouted, already heading off.
"Be care- ful..." I stopped when I saw he had already left, the walked to the weapon. I sat in front of it and began to meditate, where I could clearly see what was happening with the movement of their life forces. As long as Katsuki kept his earpiece on, I could get a pretty good idea of what was happening.
Within a minute, Katsuki and Deku's life forces combined, and the sound of an explosion rang through our communication devices. I winced, but returned to my meditative state.
"What's the matter, Deku. Afraid to stand up and fight me?" Katsuki hissed. I could only hear his half of the conversation, but I could still imagine Deku's reaction. "I won't hurt you so bad they'll have to stop the fight. Just close!" Katsuki yelled. By the following gasp, I could tell Deku must have countered.
Katsuki groaned in pain, his life force just barely flickering. I wanted to run out there and help him, but I had my job. And Katsuki didn't want me there...
"Deku..." Katsuki growled. "You're shaking in your boots, you're so scared. But you wanna fight me anyway. That's why I hate you!" He screamed.
There was a small pause before he resumed his monologue. "What's the matter, Deku? Afraid to stand up and fight me? I won't hurt you so bad they'll have to stop the fight. Just close!" I could see the maniacal smirk on his face.
"Katsuki!" I shouted into the mic. "Don't you dare. We could lose if you do something so reckless!"
"You think I care, Candles? I've been waiting for this longer than you could ever imagine..." He growled, a click sounding through my right ear, a notification that he had hung up. I cried out in exasperation, almost stepping forward to run to him, but one thing stopped me.
The heat of a life flame flickered too near and too soft to be Katsuki. That meant that Uraraka was here.
I stooped lower to the ground, slowing my breath so it couldn't be heard. Katsuki could get himself expelled for all I cared, I wasn't going to forfeit a fight with a glorified anti-gravity machine.
I closed my eyes and honed in on her life flame. It sparkled pink, and felt healthy, but not nearly as intense as Katsuki and Deku's did. Almost airy. If I were to convert it to a candle, it would smell sweet.
All unnecessary information, but a good read is always useful before a battle. She wasn't at her full potential, and probably wouldn't put up a good fight in this empty arena. I caught a flash of her helmet disappearing behind a wall before I summoned a candle. I placed it behind the fake weapon. As long as it didn't go out, I would be able to manipulate it's flame.
I shot a warning flash of flame outside the door, resulting in a hushed shriek. "Come and get it, Uraraka. Might as well put all this anger into something, yeah?"
Uraraka didn't answer. A loud boom shook the building, making me stumble. The floor below me cracked and my stomach dropped. I looked up in fear, the determined look on Uraraka's face flashing through my mind before I stumbled back as fast as I could, narrowly escaping falling through the floor.
Uraraka swung a pillar, hitting a large piece of debris towards me. I condensed the flame's heat to melt the rock, but as I did, Uraraka flew through the air and wrapped her arms around the weapon. The movement blew out my candle, and a pang of sharp pain flashed through my head.
I tipped forward, my vision going black, and then I fell.
End of Chapter.
