Hitting a heavy bag bare-fisted bloody hurts. Would hurt for the next 20 times you try to jab it . After some ten days, you will be able to punch the bag a little longer without your fists burning like it did the first time. Give it a few months, and those thirty or so punches that hurt while you started as a newbie would become a warm-up for your calloused knuckles.
Maybe emotional pain is analogous to the pain caused by all the punching. At first, we are devastated when someone hurts us. You then slowly get accustomed to the hurt. You may get to a point where it hurts no more, nonetheless, the scar is always there. But, it's the scar that's made you even more stronger than before. It's all those moments of distress that have shaped you to be the person you are now. Even though you don't feel stronger, the endurance that you hold can move mountains. No one is coming to unveil your potential.
I wonder if we're all on a quest to find our own tenacity. We must be stubborn to bring it out one day and also keep the fire undying within us and that's all that matters.
