I watched the rain drops slide down the car window as we sped down the highway. Our little maroon sebring was silent except for the pitter patter of the rain on the roof. We were moving to Washington D.C. to better understand my 'abilities' as my mother called them, but to the kids at school I was a freak. This time I had put a kid in a coma, and now we were headed to a lab in D.C. where they would poke and prod me with their fancy machines. My mom thought it was a good idea, but I didn't, I was leaving behind the only friends that had ever excepted me, Krista and Naomi. They were the only friends I had managed to make at my old school. I was going to miss them so much, all of their jokes and funny stories.

Soon we pulled into the parking lot of a blocky, brown builing with small white stones lining windows that wrapped all the way around the from of the builing. Above the front door, in big swirling letters a title read 'Washington D.C. Insitute for Mental Science'. I thought the 'mental science' part made it sound like I was going to a nut house. We rolled up to the front doors where a lady dressed in doctor's garb, waited for us. My mom parked the car but I made no move to get out, she turned back and looked at me,"this will be good for you, and me, for us," she said. I mentally rolled my eyes, "I know you think that, Mom, but I don't. How am I supposed to make any friends when I'm stuck in a mental hospital?" I said with frustration. "Now, now. This is not a mental hospital its-" I cut her off, "oh yeah, that's right I'm here to be an experiment!" I practically yelled at her. She looked like someone had just slapped her in the face. "I'm sorry..." I started but she shook her head, "let's just go," she turned and popped the trunk and got out of the car. I reached over and grabbed my bag next to me and stepped out of the car.

The lady dressed like a doctor had waited patiently for us while my mom and I had had our little dispute. "Welcome, Rose, I presume. I am Mrs. Metz, my fellow scientists and I are so honored to have you join our program." I nodded politely, not knowing what to say. Mrs. Metz motioned to the door, "why don't I show you to your rooms," she looked between my mother and I, "I hope you don't mind staying in separate parts of the institute," she said, seeming almost uncomfortable. "Oh no, that's okay," I replied maybe a little too quickly, judging by the hurt look on my mom's face. "Okay then, why don't we step inside," Mrs. Metz said and opened the door for us. I took no more than five steps inside when two kids about my age raced by on an office roller chair. "Jamie!" Mrs. Metz yelled, "Be careful! You could hurt Elizabeth!" Jamie looked back for a second, "okay, Mrs. Metz!" she must have seen me too because she also yelled, "hi there, new person!" I waved back timidly. Then thought to myself, maybe I will like this place.
