Chapter 15

Mia came back from the hospital for Christmas. Of course, Mia's family threw a small party for the occasion, to which Ali was also invited. At first, she didn't want to accept the invitation but both Mia and Joe insisted that they really wanted Ali to come, so she finally agreed. Leo waved it off, explaining that he'd spend the time with his uncle and cousin.

 Ali noticed that Mia had been pacing around excitedly all day. Only later did she learn that Mia's father had agreed that Leo would take her on the trip. Mia had dreamed of going to Italy, but neither Daniel nor Mia's doctor wanted to agree to that. After a long discussion, it was decided that Mia and Leo would visit the Grand Canyon in Colorado.

After dinner, Mia began saying goodbye to her father, Rebecca, and Joe. Then she walked over to Ali, hugged her tightly, and whispered in her ear.

"Leo's going to pick me up in a minute."

Ali's heart began to beat faster. On the one hand, she desperately wanted to see him, but on the other hand, she knew that having Leo so close and so far away at the same time would make her suffer again.

While Rebecca and Daniel were busy making sure that Mia took warm clothes and all the necessary medicines and vitamins, Joe took advantage of the situation that it was Christmas and in a few days also Ali's birthday and gave her a beautiful silver bracelet. At first, Ali refused to accept such an expensive gift. He told her that it would make him very happy if she accepted and wore the bracelet, no matter how things would go between them. Ali hoped that Joe was honest with her and not said what she just wanted to hear.

At that same moment, Victor and Leo pulled up in front of the house. When Leo opened the car door, he saw through the living room window, that Joe and Ali were standing together smiling. Joe put a bracelet around Ali's wrist. Leo asked his cousin to help Mia with her luggage.  Ali opened the door at Mia's request and was disappointed to see Victor and not Leo. At that moment, Leo tore up a note he had written to Ali on a picture she'd given to him at the restaurant. "I don't know what love is, but I love you" – that was exactly what came to his mind when he thought about her.

Daniel, Rebecca, Joe, and Ali went outside the house to say goodbye to Mia one more time.

After hugging everyone, Mia got into the car and looked at her brother with questioning eyes.

"Can we go?" muttered Leo.

"You're just like your father," Mia replied, turning her gaze to her dad, Rebecca, Joe, and Ali.

After the car drove away, Mr. and Mrs. Mackenzie and Joe entered the house. Ali stayed outside to call Vicki. Ali wondered if every time she met Leo, her heart would shatter into a thousand pieces. With eyes full of tears, she sat down on the stairs.

If he had a chance to see me and didn't, that means he doesn't care about me,  Ali thought, He never has and he never will.

If she only knew how wrong she was. If she knew he thought about their kiss as often as she did. If she knew she was the girl he told her about when they were lying in his bed. The first girl who lit the spark of love in his heart.
