’m scared,” Robert muttered to the pair of men beside him. They were in their shared pffice after being dismissed by their shady boss.
“Don’t let him know that, you saw what he did to that poor girl from DI,” William panicked.
“Do you think she was scared?”
“Don’t you see?” William sighed, “Everyone’s scared. Even Chris, even you, even me. Everyone in that room was scared but none of us know why.”
“What about you, Gio? You scared?”
“Never. Fear is a distraction.”
The trio sat in silence for a few minutes, sipping their bitter coffees and trying to enjoy the beautiful day. The birds were tweeting; leaves rustling in the calm wind; animals calling out to one another. It was a truly enjoyable day. And yet none of the three could enjoy it, not even Gio. The growing swarm of razor-butterflies made them question. Was the bird tweeting songs or screaming? Do the trees ache when the vicious wind rips away their leaves? What are the animals saying? Are they calling out for help? What if everything, even nature, can sense the building dread and the whole world will-
“I’m going for a walk.”
