It was Saturday, the time for the big event. Her dress was a V-neck showing some part of her collar bones but covered everything below. She realized that she needed a dress that would not restrict her movements should there be a need to fight. So, the dark green dress freely flowed up to her ankles.
Annette pleaded to dress her up since she did not give her the chance to do it the last time. So, she humored her and let the woman buy her dress and shoes for tonight while she focused on reviewing the files she had.
According to her client's file, he was in his late 30s with no known kin. There were no criminal records of the man. All the available information about him revolved around his trading business. His company focused on trading artifacts that was why they were attending this auction—the auction that she hoped to lead The House to what they were searching for.
Her client's car stopped by the manor's garage and picked her up. The car was not as grand as the car of her first client. This time, the car was black and unassuming, like it would fit perfectly in the background instead of standing out.
"Good evening. I assume you are Dee? I'm Colin, your date for the night," he smiled at her. The man was wearing an expensive suit and his black hair was neatly styled.
"Good evening to you, too, Mr. Ford."
"Please, call me Colin," he said as he guided her inside the car.
She was surprised that there was no driver so there were only the two of them inside. He honked once to signal the guards stationed outside that they were leaving.
Dionne felt a little tense as she looked at the disappearing manor from the side view mirror. She reminded herself of the multiple daggers strapped on her thigh to make her feel more at ease. Her client was quiet as they drove off towards their destination.
The property was like a huge castle atop a hill. It had enormous walls surrounding it and she could see that the only way in was through those giant gates. She wondered if the vampire escorts that Annette sent tailing her would find a way to enter the place.
"Here we are," Colin said as he went out to go over her door. He helped her step out and tucked her beside him.
"Are we not going in?" she asked because he parked the car outside where several other cars were parked, too.
"No, all the vehicles are to remain here. We will cross the bridge on foot," he explained.
They walked in silence. There were plenty of cars in the parking lot and she hoped that some of them were the cars tailing her. With the number of vehicles parked there, she assumed that there were also several guests invited in this auction. However, only the two of them were walking on the bridge.
When they reached the gate, a guard asked for the copy of the invitation. The guard looked into his list and verified their identities. He then gestured for them to follow a steward.
Dionne's heart rate seemed to increase when she heard loud creaking metals. She looked back and saw that the gates had been lowered. Were they the last of the guests to arrive? Was that why they are locking the place already?
Security was obviously tight, she thought. Once they reached the double doors that would lead inside, she felt that she was on her own now. The steward stopped to open the doors but left them to enter by themselves. Her palms were sweating but she maintained a cool façade.
Looking around, she noted that the place was not powered by electricity. All the light sources were from torches attached to the stone walls, and rows of wax light cradled by expensive candle holders. This made the surroundings alight and everything visible.
