It was a beautiful day, and Hyejin hadn't had a break in a long time. This was her chance to relax and enjoy some peace. Excited, she made a reservation at her favorite resort in Jeonju.
After a long drive, she parked her car and headed inside. The receptionist greeted her with a wide smile. "How may I assist you, Ma'am?"
"I booked a room under my name, Ahn Hyejin," she replied.
The receptionist checked her laptop and said, "Your room is on the third floor, room 23. Here's your key ma'am." Hyejin thanked her and walked to the elevator.
Once on the third floor, she stepped outside and looked for her room number. When she found it, she entered. The room was simple but cozy. She placed her belongings on the bedside table and felt a wave of relaxation wash over her.
Hyejin quickly changed into her one-piece swimsuit, excited to take a swim. The resort was near the beach, and since it was a private location, there weren't many tourists around. She walked down to a bench by the ocean and decided to take a break there.
After a few moments, she dove into the water, feeling the cool waves wash over her. She swam happily until the sun began to set. Once she was done, she returned to her room, feeling refreshed and content.
...
Hyejin took a quick shower and then called for room service to have dinner delivered. As she settled in with her food, she turned on the TV to watch her favorite shows. Suddenly, the sky darkened, and rain began to pour heavily outside.
She checked her phone for any missed calls from her secretary but found none. Although she was far away, she trusted her secretary to handle things at the company. As the rain intensified, Hyejin turned off the TV when, without warning, the lights went out. It was pitch black, and all she could hear was the sound of the rain. A loud clap of thunder startled her, and she felt fear creep in. She sat on the sofa, tears streaming down her face. She hated the dark and the crashing noises that came with the storm.
Suddenly, she heard a knock at the door. Panic filled her. She didn't want to open it, but the knocking continued. Her heart raced as she grabbed her cellphone, only to see it had a low battery. Feeling helpless, she knew she had to face whatever was waiting at the door.
Sobbing quietly, she opened the door to find a familiar face. "H-i, Are you okay? Why are you crying?" It was Wheein. Hyejin's tears flowed again as the thunder roared outside.
"Hey, it's okay," Wheein said gently, holding Hyejin's arms to calm her. Hyejin felt embarrassed but couldn't help it. Another flash of lightning lit up the room, and she looked down, feeling vulnerable. "C-can you stay with me for a while? Just... until the lights come back on?"
"Of course! Let's go inside your room. Standing here won't help," Wheein replied. Hyejin nodded, and Wheein took her hand, leading her into the room.
They sat together on the couch in the living room. The rain continued to pour, and the thunder grew louder. Hyejin trembled, hoping the storm would pass soon.
Wheein moved closer to her. Hyejin was surprised at first, but as the loud noises kept coming, she felt comfort in Wheein's presence. Wheein gently rubbed her back, and Hyejin began to relax. The warmth of Wheein's touch calmed her, and soon her eyelids grew heavy.
As Hyejin fell asleep, Wheein watched over her. She felt a mix of emotions, remembering her own mother and how much she missed her. After a while, the power returned, but it was still raining outside. Wheein carefully lifted Hyejin and placed her in bed. Just as she turned to leave, Hyejin's hand grasped her left hand. "Could you stay for a while?" she asked in a hoarse voice.
Wheein thought for a moment, then nodded. "Don't worry, I'm here. Just sleep; I'll keep you company." Hyejin didn't respond, but Wheein could hear her soft snores as she drifted off.
Wheein felt herself getting sleepy too, but she didn't want to leave Hyejin alone in case she woke up scared again. Eventually, her eyes closed, and she fell asleep beside Hyejin.
...
When Wheein woke up, she found herself in a strange room. She quickly sat up and noticed Hyejin was no longer in bed. Feeling a bit panicked, she got up and stepped outside the bedroom.
Hyejin was in the kitchen, holding a plate. "Good morning! I'm so sorry about last night. I wanted to thank you, so I made some food before you left. Would you like to eat?"
Wheein smiled and nodded, taking a seat at the table. "Thank you for the food and for last night. Don't worry about it; I'm just glad you're okay."
They enjoyed a breakfast of omelets, bacon, sliced fruits, and coffee. Hyejin ate almost everything, and Wheein complimented her cooking. "It's delicious. Thank you again for the meal."
"Will you leave now?" Hyejin asked.
"Yes, but you can call me if you need anything. I'm not too busy, so it's fine," Wheein replied, offering her phone number. She thanked Hyejin one last time before heading out.
...
On her way back to Seoul, Hyejin's car suddenly made a strange noise and came to a stop on a deserted road. Frustrated, she got out to check what was wrong but quickly realized she couldn't fix it.
She returned to the car and tried to call her secretary for help, but there was no signal. Feeling helpless, she sat outside, burying her face in her arms. She felt exhausted and wanted to cry but couldn't.
As she took a deep breath, closing her eyes to calm herself, she suddenly heard a car approaching. When she looked up, she saw a vehicle pull up next to her. The window rolled down, revealing Wheein stepping out.
"Hey! What's wrong?" Wheein asked, concern written all over her face.
Hyejin stood up, feeling embarrassed. "Um, my car broke down, and I can't get any help because there's no signal. No cars are passing by either," she explained, looking down.
Wheein nodded and walked to the front of Hyejin's car, opening the hood to take a look. "I'm sorry, but I can't fix it. There's a big problem with the engine. I can get help tomorrow, but it's getting dark. If you stay here, you could be in danger. You can come with me if you want," she offered.
Hyejin hesitated, unsure of what to do. She wanted to go home, but the thought of being alone in the dark made her shy about accepting Wheein's offer.
"Come on, you don't need to worry about anything. If you stay here, you might get into trouble," Wheein urged. Finally, Hyejin nodded, and Wheein opened the passenger door for her.
Sitting in Wheein's car again felt a bit awkward. Hyejin remained quiet while Wheein drove. The silence broke when Wheein asked, "Are you hungry? We're just a mile away from a drive-thru, but here's a sandwich and some milk if you want." She handed Hyejin a paper bag.
"Thank you, but what about my car?" Hyejin asked, pulling the sandwich out.
"Don't worry. I texted my secretary about it. He'll go get it and bring it to your company," Wheein reassured her.
Hyejin nodded and took a bite of the sandwich. It tasted good, and she felt a little guilty for not admitting she was hungry. As she prepared to take another bite, she felt an itch on her neck, causing her to pause.
"Is there cream cheese in this sandwich?" she asked calmly.
"I'm not sure. My secretary gave it to me. Why?" Wheein looked concerned.
"I'm allergic to cream cheese, so I thought there might be some in here," Hyejin said with a forced smile, placing the sandwich back in the bag.
She grabbed the milk and took a sip, hoping it would help soothe her neck. Wheein watched her closely, worried. "Are you okay? Your neck is getting red," she said.
Hyejin tried to check her neck but couldn't see it. "I'm fine. Don't worry about me," she insisted, drinking more milk to cool herself down.
Wheein kept glancing at her, and Hyejin felt her gaze. To ease her discomfort, she closed her eyes for a moment, trying to find relief from the heat.
