Twyla's eyes slowly opened, allowing light to flood her vision. Slowly, she raised her head. Her neck cracked with her movements, causing a low hiss to leave her lips. Memories from the previous night smacked the leftover sleep out of her.
The room was empty, minus the multiple lights and lamps that littered the ground. There wasn't a single shadow, meaning she couldn't teleport. Twyla felt as her spine began shaking. The reality of her situation sunk her heart. Panic drowned her love for her friend.
A small clank came from beyond the walls, and Twyla perked up at the sound. If she wasn't alone, then maybe the home owners came back! Maybe they'd help Twyla escape and get Howleen some serious mental help!
A dry, hoarse scream left Twyla's throat. Someone had to be close by. Someone had to have heard it. After a few silent seconds, she tried again.
A few thumps came from a nearby room, and Twyla grinned. She was getting out!
The door creaked open, and Twyla dropped her grin. A pair of familiar eyes stared back at her from the darkness.
Howleen slowly stepped into view, and Twyla's stomach flipped. Any and all hope she had was replaced with terror at her friend. Howleen's eyes were red and puffy, and tears streaked down her cheeks. She wiped her nose and eyes with her sleeve and hiccupped.
"I-I'm so sor-ry." Howleen sobbed. "I just couldn't let-let you take her away!"
Twyla's heart broke for her friend, but the feeling quickly went away as she remembered what Howleen had done. She cast her eyes to her broken wrist. The pain didn't seem to bother her, and she looked back to Howleen. Howleen dropped a small needle from behind her back. Twyla's eyes grew at the sight.
"You sai-id it hurt.. so I gave you s-some pain medicine." Howleen looked at the ground.
Twyla shook her head. Out of everything she did remember, she didn't remember getting stabbed with a needle. "What else did you give me?"
Howleen cried harder. "I thought I accidental-ly killed you!!"
Twyla shook her head to try and rid herself of her horror. She had no idea what she was drugged with, and she feared the effects of it.
"Howleen...W-What was it..?"
Howleen stared at the ground silently, allowing the tears to run down her face.
Twyla bit on her tongue in regret. She didn't know how reactive Howleen was, and she didn't want to anger her again.
The silence strangled Twyla, but Howleen didn't seem to notice. After a few more seconds, Howleen exited the room and shut the door. A quiet click followed, signaling that Twyla had been locked in the room. Twyla allowed herself to cry.
She had no idea what she had been injected with. Would she die? Would she go to sleep? Would she have a seizure? Twyla also didn't know how her friend could have locked her up like an animal.
There were a lot of things Twyla didn't know, and it only caused her more stress. Her lack of control panicked her.
She was sure Howleen wouldn't hurt her unless she was given a reason. Howleen actually stopped the pain! Surely there was still some part of her that was sane?
Howleen shook her head against the cold as she locked up the cabin. She had replaced the locks and all, making sure that there was zero chance of anyone else entering.
She made quick steps to the main road, then she dashed to Merrin's Bookstore.
Just as she had hoped, you were working. She pulled a small rose quartz crystal from her pocket and squeezed.
She had read that certain crystals can connect to certain emotions. If you were a goddess, which Howleen was sure you were, then you should have some type of reaction to the crystal, especially since you were a goddess of love.
Her hands pushed against the door, chiming the welcome bell and alerting everyone in the store of her presence.
You felt your heart plummet at the sight of her. Whether Twyla was honest or not didn't matter. It was still unnerving for you to be near her friend after the warning you had received.
After a few minutes, the wolf girl walked to the counter with a small handful of books. Most of the books had titles like 'Witchcraft and Potions: The Beginners Guide' or 'Deities for Dummies', but one stuck out.
"'Medical Procedures for At-Home Emergencies'?" You hummed as you scanned it. "You preparing for something?"
The girls face erupted into a blush, and she looked away while stuttering.
"I-It's just in ca-case." She whispered. "In case I ne-ed to know."
You nodded. "Well, I hope it doesn't ever come in handy. I'd hate for you to get hurt."
"I'm Howleen." She said.
"I'm (Y/N)." You replied back.
"Ho-How long have you worked here?"
"A few years, I think." You squinted, trying to remember the span of your employment. "I could be wrong though."
She giggled. "You don't remember how long you've worked somewhere?"
"Not really." You laughed. "It's hard to remember everything without really sitting down and focusing on it. Well, have a nice day!"
Howleen waved goodbye and left the store. You breathed a sigh of relief. Maybe being overly nice would save your ass if Twyla was right?
Howleen held her blushing face as she ran against the wind. She was right! The crystal affected you!!
Howleen would make sure to always have a rose quartz in her pocket while interacting with you from then on.
