NATALIE'S POV
Spencer lays on the ground, bleeding all over the place, unconscious.
Nate backs up and vanishes.
I look at his license plate.
V87 45K
I memorize it, panicked. I kneel next to Spencer.
"MOM!" I scream.
They saw everything through the window and they're rushing outside.
He's still alive.
Mom calls an ambulance and I sit next to Spencer, crying, holding his limp hand.
"I'm going to kill him! Oh my god!"
I tell Uncle Albert, who's on the phone with the police, Nate's license plate number.
I hear sirens.
"Mom, give me your engagement ring."
"What?" she asks.
"Give it!"
She does. I put it on my left hand and adjust my boobs and fix my hair to make myself look a little older.
The ambulance pulls in and puts Spencer on a stretcher.
I put on Mom's flip flops.
"I'm his fiancé, I'm coming with you." I say.
The EMT opens his mouth to argue, but his eyes rest on the ring and he sighs and nods and let me in.
I sit next to Spencer in the ambulance and they work on him and I sit there, watching.
This is my fault.
I should've pushed him.
He might die because of me.
****
Spencer's family and my family and the guys and their family show up. I've met all of their family.my head has been in my hands for three and a half hours. As far as anyone knows, I'm Spencer's fiancé.
I told everyone that arrived too.
Mrs. Key, Spencer's Mom, she didn't want me to go in first, but she agreed to let me.
It sounds conceded, but she likes me.
His whole family has told me a trillion and one times.
The Doctor walks over to us.
"Well, for starters, I know you're not Spencer's fiancé, but it's okay. I understand why you lied."
I give the ring back to Mom.
"Second, Spencer's still unconscious. He had glass from the broken window in him so we did surgery to remove it. He has stiches in the back of his head, a bad concussion, and a broken wrist. He's okay though. You guys are more than welcome to go up there and wait."
"Lead the way." Mrs. Key says.
We all follow him upstairs to Spencer's room, which he doesn't have to share.
We sit around.
He looks so peaceful.
The police arrested Nate.
We all wait. I put sweatpants on over my spandex.
We're all whispering, but I'm quiet.
I hear a mumbling and everyone trails off.
Spencer's eyes are open. She's trying to speak.
"What son?" Mr. Key asks as Mrs. Key hands Spencer water.
He drinks it, and then says, "Where's Natalie?" in a hurt voice.
I'm sitting on the floor.
Everyone looks at me.
Spencer, after struggling, he sits up.
"Are you okay?" he asks.
I stand up.
"Yes." I whisper.
"no you aren't." he mumbles. "What's wrong?"
"You almost died because of me. I'm sorry."
He frowns.
"I don't regret it."
"but you're hurt and it's my fault."
"No, I'm hurt and it's Nate's fault. I would do it again, infinite times, if it means he doesn't hurt you again."
"But why?"
"The same reason I held you when you cried and carried you six and a half miles. The same reason I made sure you didn't drown in the shower, and I threatened Nate." He says. "Because you're my goal."
Everyone knows what he's talking about.
"Your goal?" I ask. "What does that mean?"
He lays back down.
"It means I'm going to marry you someday."
I laugh, expecting him to laugh too.
I know he's joking.
But he doesn't. He just stares at me without batting an eyelash.
"Wait, you're serious?" I ask.
"Yes." He says.
"I don't want to get married." I whisper.
"That's because you haven't dated me yet."
