The horse-pulled cart takes us to a big boat. The area is quickly filling up with more people from the different villages. Everywhere I turn, there are tears and screams and mourning. It’s unbearable. As we step off the cart, I grip onto Brynne’s hand tightly. Not because I was scared for myself, but because I was scared for her. If anything were to happen to her, I wouldn’t be able to live with myself.
Three guards guide us towards the plank of wood leading up to the boat, then they leave us to our fate. No one’s boarding the boat yet. I look over to Brynne and she’s staring at something, or more specifically, someone. I follow her gaze to a guard standing near the gate. He looks young, around seventeen maybe. Looking back at my sister, I wave my hand in front of her face.
“Hey,” I say, “Earth to Bry?”
Brynne blinks a few times, then finally realizes that I’m standing there. “Oh, hi, Luke,” she says.
I raise an eyebrow. “Seriously? What was that?”
She blinks. “What was what?”
I sigh irritably. “What was with the staring?”
Brynne looks back at the guard, then at me. “Uh… I- I don’t know… I guess he just looks… familiar.”
