The moment Byulyi was out of earshot, Jin immediately spun around in his seat to face Jungkook, a mixture of irritation and disbelief displaying themselves on his face.
“Why would you say that?” Jin groaned, leaning back slightly in his seat as he crossed his arms with a grimace.
The younger merely shrugged in reply, whispers of a smile playing on his lips. “She's your girlfriend.”
“She's not.”
“She might be if you asked her out,” Hoseok interjected, smiling brightly at him as he usually does.
From Hoseok’s side, Yoongi snorted, “If you can take her blabbering, that is.”
Jin, finally finding an ally, gestured grandly to Yoongi with both hands. "See? Even Yoongi agrees with me. I'm not going to date her. I barely even know her."
“She seems nice.”
“She's annoying.”
"And the only girl you've talked to in weeks that isn’t your mother."
Jin's neck would have snapped off his shoulders with how quickly he looked at Jimin. "Yah! I do talk to girls! And they talk to me!"
"Mrs Baek doesn't count hyung," Taehyung deadpanned, spooning rice into his mouth without taking his eyes off the cellphone. "She's been teaching calculus here for almost 30 years."
Heat rushed to his cheeks at Taehyung's comment. What was this betrayal his friends were showing him?
“S-so what if girls don't talk to me huh?” he stammered, “ I'm busy most of the time. I don't have time for them and if you were focusing on your studies as much as I am, so would you!” Jin’s mouth spat out the words quickly and furiously with pursed lips. By the end he was breathing heavily, his cheeks staining crimson, his ears blushing red.
Hoseok only sighed, an expression close to worry and pity on his face. “Which is exactly why you need to date Jin. You're too...student-y. You need to have fun! And Byulyi-ssi seems fun! Maybe you'll hit off, you don't know.”
Jin rolled his eyes. “I'm a student. Of course I'm going to be student-y Hoseok-ah.”
“But there is such a thing as too much. You know that dont you?” Yoongi quipped, folding his arms on the table so that could look Jin eye to eye.
Jin’s shoulders deflated, mouth hanging open. “Yoongi, man, come on, I thought you were on my side.”
“I am. But Seok-ah has a point," Yoongi said, tilting his head to point to Hoseok who only smiled at Jin at that comment.
“Unbelievable.”
“Okay, okay stop terrorizing Jin. If he doesn't want to date yet, let him,” Namjoon, ever the mediator, stepped in, holding a hand out to his friends as if to say ‘stop’.
Jin straightened in his seat, dramatically extending his hand towards Namjoon.
“Thank you,” he exhaled. “Finally someone logical.”
“But Jin, I do think you're focusing too much on school.”
Jin groaned dramatically, folding in on himself in his chair. “Not you too. For the last time—”
“I didn't say you should date Byulyi-ssi,” Namjoon interrupted, directing his eyes to stare directly at Jin. “I'm saying you should find time to let yourself have fun too. You rarely game or hangout with us nowadays because you're always reviewing.”
Upon the mention of academics, Jin’s demeanor visibly muted. His face smoothing out to a more neutral expression as opposed to his explosive anger earlier. The group exchanged worried looks with each other, noticing the obvious change.
“I need to score high on the CSAT,” he murmured, voice suddenly quiet.
“I know,” Joon soothed. “We do too. But we dont let that take away time for us to have fun.”
Namjoon sighed, his eyes softening as he noticed how Jin looked.
There was a time when they were academic rivals with Namjoon being in the lead. They used to head butts, compete in every subject, and debate over recitation.
It was only when Namjoon started letting loose that they started becoming friends.
As he got older, although he knew he was still young, he realized how utterly fruitless all those awards and accolades were when they sacrificed his personal time for them. It took him more than half of his life to realize that, he just hoped that his friend would realize that too.
He smiled at his friend sympathetically. “Loosen up a bit, Jin. Just let things unfold in front of you, like Byulyi-ssi. You don't need to date her but maybe you should talk to her.”
