Steve woke up, feeling somewhat strange. It took him a moment to realise Billy wasn't there and he rolled his eyes. He hoped he was making breakfast and not arguing with the scientists are anything stupid like that. His eyes lit up suddenly at the thought of Billy's cooking but he slowed his excited movements, trying to put on a blank expression as he walked up.
Billy was staring out of one of the windows. His expression was hardened and Steve instantly got worried, wondering what he could be thinking about. He hoped it wasn't his fault. After all, their conversation from the night before had been a bit... Weird. Billy probably thought he was gay, now. Heck, sometimes he thought it, too. His thoughts stopped for a moment when Billy glanced back and smiled at him, immediately starting up again when he slowly walked over, hands in his pockets.
How does he look so good walking around in just sweatpants and a tank top? He waited till Billy had slowed to a stop in front of him, wondering what the huge smile on his face was for. "What's got you in such a great mood? Fuck, don't tell me you're drunk again. I am not taking care of you, it's too late! We only drink in the early AMs, dummy-"
"Last I remember, I did the taking care of the drunk most recently." Steve quietly covered his face and glared at him through his fingers.
"Whatever, Billy, what's got you so happy? You slept later than me, thought you'd be up later, too."
"You... did sleep before me. But I was so excited that I couldn't sleep!" Steve smiled a bit, confused as hell but he never got to see Billy in this childish state often. Thus, when he held out a hand to him, Steve placed his hand in it, ignoring any thoughts about how strange their relationship was. It didn't matter, they were just close friends. He would feel the same way with Robin... Except not at all as giddy.
Steve suddenly realised they were going to the scientists' rooms, his steps slowing but Billy pushed on and opened one of the doors, gesturing for him to go in. Not hearing an indignant cry of any kind, he took a peek, eyes and mouth wide open. "Wait a second... They... What the fuck?"
"They're gone, Steve!"
"Yeah, I see that now?" He went to the other room, shocked once again. He began to look around the house, peeking at the window Billy was staring out of. Finally, he gave up, locking eyes with Billy again with an arched brow. "What did you do, Hargrove...?"
"What I should have done the moment they touched you. I talked to Doctor Owens. They're not coming back. They breached the rules. Heck, they're probably screwed in general! Heard him say they're gonna get some disciplinary action for what they did!"
"You spoke to him?! What the hell, Billy, I'm so proud of you!" He lunged at him, tackling the man in a hug but Billy stood strong, winding his arms round Steve's waist to keep him secure once he'd plastered himself to his body like the monkey he was. "Wait... But... I... The moment they touched me? What do you mean by that? Didn't you call him about the therapy they did to you? Where your skin was on fucking fire and red from how long and how hot it was?"
"Don't forget that I blacked out-"
"YOU BLACKED OUT?!"
"Chill, man, it's all good. I didn't care much about that. It's when they tried to convince you to do that therapy... That's when I fucking snapped. It was the final straw... Should have ended this all a long time ago. I of course told him about how much they overdid it, didn't give any reason but whatever. I knew that was the only way he'd take it seriously. So... We're free now, woo!"
"Billy, you can't be serious. You called him because me, not for yourself?" He shrugged when Steve shoved him back a bit, not understanding why he was annoyed. "How the hell do I get you to care about yourself?"
