~Summers Beginning~

Summer had just began in Sunset Bird. Summer in Sunset Bird was a special time of year.

Your usually sleepy town begins to bustle.

It was a popular tourist destination, with people coming from all over to enjoy the beach, the weather, and the relaxation that came with both.

The smell of the ocean, crisp and salty, hung in the air, bringing three whole months of school-less vacation with it.
Though, during the summers Mayu's parents didnt like her wandering too far outside of the neighborhood.

But she knew the area pretty well, along with the people.

Most people came and went from Sunset Bird. But some stayed and did what her mom calls "putting down roots".

They built businesses, they got to know each other, and they definitely said hello to nice young kids who waved when passing their stores.

Whenever Mayu walked around town mostly meant that the familiar, friendly residents waved, or asked how her family was doing, or most often just saying hello.

Mayu was always too shy to say hi back most of the time, but she greeted them back anyways. It was the polite thing to do, after all. And her moms taught her to always be respectful.

But today... there was a man sitting on the curb outside of her house...?

He was sitting with his head in his hands, his whole body slumped over.

Mayu wondered where he had came from, or if he was a random statue that magically sprung up from the ground overnight.

Whoever, or whatever he was. Mayu had never seen him before

One thing about her knowing everyone in
Sunset Bird, was that people she didn't recognize, always stood out.

It was rare for the tourists to venture into the "residential district", as both her moms called it.

So, for Mayu, not knowing who a total stranger was, set off a lot of red flags.

Her moms had a talk with her and her big sister Lizzie about this kind of situation before.

They mentioned that some people aren't good to talk to, but other types of people can help you even if you don't know them.

But, Mayu wasn't sure about this man yet.

Still, she felt a bit scared knowing that he was blocking the way to her front door.

She slowed down, her mind racing for ideas on how to get past him without being seen... but it was too late to escape.

There was a split second where his eyes met Mayu's.

Mayu quickly averted her gaze and pretended to be stare at a bird hovering nearby.

"Hey!"

His voice startled Mayu. Yet, she still didn't look at him.

The bird landed on too of a nearby gatepost, and Mayu tried to keep her eyes on it.
