Chap 37 bringing things to light

Around a campfire, Ruby Rose, Quill Branwen, June Arc, Lie Rin, you and Nora Valkyrie sit on four logs positioned in a square. Quill has just finished telling the story of the Maidens.

There is silence and Quill takes a swig from her flask. She has a bandage wrapped around her abdomen over her clothing.

Quill: Really? No questions?

June: Of course we have questions. This is just... a lot to take in and y/n You never told us.

You: I'm sorry I kept this, but we were in danger

Quill: (sighing) Sure, of course.

Ruby: So these... Maidens... They're powerful fighters that don't need Dust to use magic.

Quill: Yeah.

Nora: And there are four of them?

Quill: Yup. Always.

Rin: Which means that, whenever one of them dies, the power transfers to someone - a female - that they cared about?

Quill: Whoever was in their thoughts last. Important distinction. Best option is someone we can trust. Regardless, their souls become combined, in a way.

June: And that's what you were trying to do to Pyrrha... the night the tower fell. You were trying to turn her into one of them.

Quill: The previous Fall Maiden, Amber, had been attacked. She was young, inexperienced. And her assailant, who we now know is Cinder, somehow managed to steal some of her power, but not all of it. We were afraid that if we didn't do something, the rest would go to her as well, luckily y/n here healed her and now she's in Vacuo for her and the Maiden safety.

June: (looking angry) So you forced it on Pyrrha.

Qrow: We didn't force anything. We explained the situation and gave her the choice, and she chose. You were there, you heard her she never wanted it and Amber chose to nor go with it because she cared about her.

June hangs her head for a brief moment before getting up and walking several feet away from group. Quill watches her go.

Ruby: That guy, Tyrian - why was he after me and y/n?

Quill: (sighing) Well, you definitely painted a target on your back with what you two did at Beacon. I told you having silver eyes is a rare trait along with y/n I think he might be the only one with his kind of power. And the fact that you were able to use them seems to have upset some very powerful people. Not many people know about the silver eyes or that. Those that do aren't very happy that one has surfaced. That's why I've been keeping an eye on you in order to make sure you were safe. All of you.

You: good, point

Ruby: Well, then, why not just travel with us? It seems like that would've been way easier.

June answers her loudly enough to be heard, but with her back still turned to everyone.

June: He was using you as bait.

Quill: Look, I wouldn't put it like that - it's complicated.

June: (turning back to face her) What is all of this? Y/n and Ruby are being hunted, the schools are being attacked, all for what?! What is the point of all of this?! Will you just tell us what's going on?!

Quill stares at her, then slouches over with a sigh.

Quill: Would you sit down? You're stressin' me out, 'kid.

June sits back down on her log and crosses her arms. Quill starts to take another swig, but changes her mind before the flask reaches her lips.

Quill: Not many people are super religious these days.
