Chapter 7 – Evril's Decision

-

"Why are you the key?" Her clenched fists tightened.

The dark fog continuously surrounded them while they moved forward. It was eerie that they've been walking for several minutes after distorting out of the Shadow Summons, and they hadn't gotten into a single illusion again. Maybe their slow pace is part of the culprit, but it's necessary as Exadrin can't move too hastily after healing recently.

"Why are you the key?" She bit her lips.

That's the fourth time Evril asked the same question.

What happened back there was amazing. Evril got them out of the illusion, but he asked Keir a weird question the moment they got out. Since then, it's been quiet, aside from Exadrin's occasional grunts and Evril's questioning. Even Altair behaved the entire time while he and Hale supported Exadrin's movement.

Aziel, who was in the lead and right in front of Keir, took a sharp turn with the Naisa in one hand. Are they getting close?

"Why are you the key?" A hand climbed up to the part of her blouse where her heart sat and gripped the cloth.

"Evril," Exadrin managed to say. "Not only is it rude to ask the same thing repeatedly, but you're also making Keir uncomfortable."

Keir sighed. How empathetic is this elf to have noticed the anxiety growing inside her? Nonetheless, thanks, Exadrin.

"But, I want to know the answer."

"..No one knows the answer to that, I think." Evril turned to the one closely floating behind Aziel. "Do you have an idea, though, Evril?"

"How about you, Jax?" Jaxith shook her body in response. "Why not?"

"I just don't. I'm sure even Keir is not that sure of why herself." Keir nodded as Jaxith turned to look at her, maybe for confirmation. "See?"

Evril poked his chin. "I have an idea."

"Really?"

"Yup!"

"Would you care to share whatever theory you have, then?" Evril giggled before his hands clasped behind him.

Something about his face, despite his smile, darkened. "It's a secret." Keir averted her gaze when his lime eyes jumped to hers. "Do you have an idea, Keir?"

Why is Evril acting strangely distant even though he's right beside Keir? Does he know something she doesn't? Something they all don't?

Keir shook her head, "Sadly, I don't."

Does he know something she wants to know?

"Tch." Aziel's grunt echoed as her vision froze and warped again—the same sensation when they first got into the Summons.

After countless blinks, what greeted them was a small space of silver floors, walls, and ceiling.

Keir bit her lips. The illusion where she can determine who is automatically not the one with dark intentions towards Aziel. Because who would volunteer to be left behind if their goal is to take the stone for themselves?

Altair faked a cough after quite an uneasy silence, "Alright, so who–"

"I'll stay!"

As if standing in a room in low temperatures due to their cold air conditioning, Keir won't move. But, she forced herself to turn her head to the child everyone else was shooting dumbfounded looks at.

Did she hear that right?

Exadrin pushed himself away from Altair and Hale's arms, his palms landing on his brother's shoulders, his face pale and body shaking.
