Prologue, Part 1

Zenitsu POV: The usual cold and darkness of the winter season engulfed my tiny, seven year old body as I walked through the seemingly abandoned town.

I wrapped my arms around myself as I shivered. I squinted to see snow slowly falling on the ground, not having a care in the world at all. I squinted to try and see through the darkness, as the sun had not shown its light for quite a while through the long and dreary winter.

I was hungry and tired as I had not had anything to eat in what I believed was three days. My stomach grumbled, and I occasionally stumbled around because of my exhaustion. Everyday was a struggle for survival, I had to fight for the most basic things like water and food.

I couldn't remember a single day where someone took care of me or didn't look at me with disgust or hatred. To avoid the nasty looks of disdain, I normally avoided the town and went looking for food at night.

I was also a huge crybaby as well. As much as I tried to stop crying and become a man, it was not possible for me. I had always hated myself for my normal and useless shedding of tears, but I was not the only one who hated myself for that. I had always been known as the "hated boy", the "nasty thief", or the "big eared boy". I knew about these nicknames and many more ugly ones because of my ears.

My ears were advanced to the degree where I could hear what someone was thinking. I always blamed my ears for being the reason my mother and father had left me when I was only one year old.

My father's last words to me went something like..."Sorry, but this is where we have to leave you Zenitsu...I hope that you can become...I know that you will become the strongest...and be the one to finally end..."

The picture of the way he looked at me in my memory became blurrier and hazier every day. The words have also faded away over the years. But the way he looked at me seemed disgusted, or maybe even relieved, to get rid of me.

He was probably relieved to get rid of a useless, big eared, boy with unnatural streaks of golden in his hair that probably had the purpose of giving the world a person to mock.

As I remembered my life up until this point I walked into the market, rubbing my eyes before tears fell. I had decided that I couldn't wait any longer and had to steal some food otherwise I would either starve to death or freeze to death.

Not that anyone would really care.

I quickly used my heightened sense of hearing to track any incoming people. After I sensed that no one was coming near the fruit stall, I quickly ran at my fastest speed and grabbed the nearest fresh fruit.

I exited the market hiding the fruit in my pocket. After I had reached my house, or rather, my makeshift shack made of broken shoji doors and an old discarded futon. I reached into my pocket and took out the fruit.

It was very dark, however now that I had the fruit in my hand I recognized the plump feel of it as a peach. I never knew why but whenever I held a peach in my hand, blurry memories would flash through my mind and I would be hit with nostalgia and incredible sadness.

As I raised the pale pink fruit to my mouth, my ears received a sound. I'd heard that sound too many times to even count. It sounded like someone was getting abused.

Suddenly there was a loud crash which I suspected was a door being opened and then a dull thud as something or rather someone hit the ground.

I heard a man shouting "You useless brat! You dropped that plate! That plate is worth more than you will ever be! I'll have to punish you later for this indiscipline".
