Chapter 19

Kick the Pope's Arse

The Manor House Baxter's Office 9:33 hrs Shortly after Isaac and Seymour's arrests

Baxter couldn't believe the amount of noise three phones in his office ringing together could generate. And it was still reasonably early in the morning.

'Dam it...!' he said to Bella as she answered one of the callers, 'I'm going to pull the bloody plugs on the phones!'

Two more phones suddenly sparked too life as he passed them. He ignored the ringing and continued on his way next-door to Bella's small office. Where all the main-phone lines for the entire house where situated. Baxter resisted his bad tempered urge to rip all the phone lines from the wall at once. Instead he stood still and took a couple of deep breaths. Then he gently one at a time and very carefully removed the five plugs from there plastic sockets.

All the ringing phones suddenly went dead and there was silence.

Bella came into the office just as he was turning around to leave 'Well that's stopped them, thank God!' she said giggling like a teenager with her hand up in front of her mouth looking self-conscious.

The sight of her quickly defused any aggression Baxter had been harbouring he even managed a little smile.

'I was thinking of checking out the damage done to the library. I might have a quick look at that hole in the wall, the one behind the bookcase?' He said with a deliberate lack of enthusiasm in his voice.

Bella went to say something but Baxter beat her to it 'Perhaps it would be safer if you stayed here and "manned the fort" as they say.'

'And do what?' she replied 'You have just disconcerted all the phone lines!' Bella looked upset like she was about to cry.

Normally Baxter was used to getting his own way and would have turned and left the crying Bella where she stood.

But somehow he found himself agreeing to Bella accompanying him to the library the words had left his lips before he could think straight.

'Okay...You can come, but I better get the torch from the small storeroom first!'

Bella quickly jumped for joy the tears were swiftly replaced by a bright and dam sexy smile.

Baxter shook his head from side to side like he was trying to shake something out of his ears. He mumbled something under his breath she didn't understand what he had just said before he hastily turned and left, Bella followed a discreet distance behind him.

They made there way to the small storeroom where Baxter picked up a black rubber torch which was sitting on top of an old desk. The torch was about nine or ten inches long and looked ancient and badly battered. He pushed the button on the top of the torch, a very dim light shone out from the small bulb behind the badly scattered glass lens.

Baxter cursed and started rifling through the drawers of the desk where the torch had been sitting. He finally found what he was looking for, three short fat batteries.

Even after he had inserted the new batteries the light from the torch was still very weak.

'Bugger it...it will do for now!' he said as he headed for the door with Bella in tow.

After more fumbling with the door keys and a lot of cursing under his breath Baxter finally managed to enter the library.

Bella cautiously followed in behind him watching every corner as she slowly entered the large room.
