The Rules

Growing up my Grandmother had told me tales of the fae, beings who were so enchanting and magical they were considered to be a mere myth. When most people think of faeries, you think of miniature people with wings who grant wishes and bestow blessings on the humans lucky enough to come across them. But grandmother's tales had no such happy endings, for she knew that the faeries were tricky creatures and if you make one mistake, you could find yourself in their debt and trust me, that's a position you never want to be in.

So let me share with you the rules my grandmother shared with me, for if you are ever unlucky enough to meet the fae, these six simple rules could save your life.

Rule number one, never accept a faerie gift. Sounds a little odd I know, but trust me, this gift comes with conditions. If you accept one of these gifts, you'll end up owing them anything they ask for.

Rule number two, do not eat any of the faerie food or drink their wine, it's just too delicious. No human food would ever be able to satisfy you or your appetite again and side effects can range from madness to death and in some cases, you could find yourself trapped in the faerie realm.

Rule number three, if you hear music playing from seemingly nowhere do not follow it, it could lead you to what is called a faerie circle. These little circles of toadstools are a no go zone, never step inside one. These circles hold Faerie dances; the music is so enchanting that anyone who passes by will feel an imminent desire to join the dance. Sounds harmless right? Well here's the issue, faerie time works differently to our own, an hour in the dance might be a few centuries in human time and that's assuming you could even make it that long. There are some tales where humans haven't been able to keep up with their faerie dance companions and they end up dancing until their feet turn to bloody stumps.

Rule number four and in my opinion, this is one of the most important ones to follow. Do not tell a Faerie your full name. Your name holds power and once they have it, they will have power over you.

Rule number five, be polite, be very polite. Your life may just depend on it.

Rule number six, whatever you do, never say thank you. If we go back to rule number one, never accept a faerie gift you would think you could politely decline by saying "no thank you" right? Wrong. If you say thank you, even when you're declining what they offer you, it means you have accepted what they have offered and you will therefore owe them a favour.

So there you have it, tricky business faeries are. But don't worry, it's extremely unlikely that you'll ever come across one, but if you do, just make sure you follow the rules. Simple right? If only I had followed my own advice.
