•Akio•
They're all gone...
My entire pack...
My friends, my father the alpha, everyone...
It's been years since then, and yet I can still remember it like it was yesterday. I was just a pup when it happened too, and as much as I want to forget everything, I keep getting flashbacks of the day when I lost everything...
I wake up today with an almost overwhelming feeling of joy. My tenth birthday. I've been waiting for this day for my whole life, and so has my father. In my pack, The Mystic Claw, are a very special pack of wolves. When a wolf in my pack turns ten, they shift under the light of the full moon and are gifted with some magical ability, whether it's invisibility, speed, mind reading, everyone gets something. My father, Alpha Lumios, has the power to bend, create and form light at will, and today, I'm hoping to get an ability just as great and powerful as his. As I walk through my village, I'm greeted by my fellow pack mates and friends.
"Morning Akio." My best friend Micah says, running up to me in his wolf form and tackling me. Since he's a year older than me, he already shifted into his wolf form, which is a dirty brown with black markings down it's back.
"Hey Micah." I reply, trying to get him off me.
"So, how's your birthday been so far?" He asks rolling off my body and onto the grass.
"Well, until you jumped on me, it's been going great." I say, dusting myself off.
"Oh come on, you know I had to. It's a tradition." He says shifting back, revealing his hazel brown eyes.
"I see you and Autumn are getting along." I say, gesturing to his wolf.
"Yeah, he's awesome. I can't wait for you to finally shift so your wolf and Autumn can race each other through the forest." He says. I chuckle and walk out towards the gate. But Micah grabs my hand before I can go.
"Wait, don't you want me to give you your birthday gift?" He asks.
"Oh, yes. I almost forgot." I say, blushing sheepishly. He takes my hand and puts a small object wrapped in cloth in the palm of my hand, and closes it.
"Happy birthday Akio." He says before being called by his parents. He bids me goodbye and I make my way to the gate surrounding my village. Just as I'm about to run out into the forest, in held back by my hoodie. I turn back and find my dad, with a serious expression on his face, his dark grey hair glistening in the setting sun.
"Uh, hi dad." I say nervously.
"Akio, where do you think you're going?" He asks. His blue eyes piercing into mine.
"Out into the forest to my treehouse." I say casually.
"Is that so?" He lifts his eyebrow playfully.
"Yeah dad. I'll be back soon, I promise." I say.
"That's what you said the last time, and you came back at midnight." He says turning my body towards him and crossing his arms.
"But I didn't come back with a single scratch." I protest.
"Yes, but you were chased by rogues before being escorted back here by Rukio." He says before pulling my snow white hair back, revealing a scar I got when I was seven.
"Oh come on dad. That won't happen again. Plus I was seven back then." I say. He looks at me unconvinced.
"No."
"I have a dagger, in case I'm in danger." I say pulling it out of my hoodie. He gives me a disapproving and angry look.
"The answer is still no."
"But dad-"
"UNLESS YOU WANT TO END UP WITH YOUR BLOOD SPLATTERED ACROSS THE FOREST FLOOR, THE ANSWER IS NO, AKIO!" Dad screams at me angrily, drawing attention from all the wolves around me. I cower and whimper, tears starting to form in my eyes. His angry expression slowly softens.
He sighs and kneels down in front of me. He wipes away the tears running down my cheek and gently places his forehead on mine. He closes his eyes, and a soft blue glow surrounds us, and after a few seconds, it and my fear fade away he places his hand on my cheek and looks at me.
"Akio, I lost your mother when you were just a year and a half. She went into the forest and never came back out. I found her corpse myself, and I cannot tell you how much I cried that night. I don't want the same to happen to you, my son, okay, Starscout?" He says stroking my hair. I look at the ground, but nod in understanding.
"Yes father, I understand." I mutter. He pulls my chin up and stares me in the eye.
"I'm glad you do son. Now come, I want to be by your side when you unlock your wolf form." He says, walking in the direction of our house. I look toward the gate in longing, before hearing a long sigh coming from my dad. He stops in place.
"Be back by nine." He says. I stare at him surprised. Did he really just say what I think he said?
"R-Really?" I ask.
"Yes. It's your birthday. What father would I be if I were to restrict you of your freedom?" He says turning back with a small smile. I smile and hug him from behind.
"THANK YOU THANK YOU thank you!" I say happily.
'But, the moment you're in danger, speak to me through the mind link immediately.' He say I a serious tone.
'Yes dad. I will.' I nod, before running off to the gate.
"Oh, and Akio! Before you go I just want to tell you one more thing!" He shouts just as I reach the gate entrance. I stop and turn back to face him.
"Happy birthday, Starscout." He says with a smile before turning and walking back to the house.
"Thanks dad." I say, before quickly running out the gate and into the forest.
As I make my way to my treehouse, dodging trees, jumping over roots and swinging from branches, I notice a lot of new scents that I haven't ever noticed before. I slow down and sit by a nearby lake to catch my breath. It's only then that I notice that the sky is dark, and the stars are twinkling in the night sky, most of them covered by the clouds passing by. I look up and admire the mix of black, navy blue, lighter blues and whites in the sky. Then, as the clouds part slowly, they revealing a bright, white and blue full moon. It's the most beautiful moon I've ever seen. I stare at it for what feels like an eternity. I notice my body giving off a faint, light blue glow, and a touch of white and blue on my face. I look down at my body and then up at the moon again, and let out a loud and long howl. I close my eyes, as a blinding blue light fills the forest and ripples through the trees. After a minute, I open my eyes again only to find that my hands aren't...hands. they're paws. And my chest I covered with snow white fur.
I shifted!
"I...I shifted...I SHIFTED!" I howl happily. I jump around in my new wolf form and bark happily. I prance around and admire myself, taking in all the magical markings running down my back and tail. I then go over to the lake and look down into the water, and see a snow white Wolf with glowing blue eyes and glowing white markings staring back at me. I stare at him closely, seeing my wolf and examining every close detail. After another minute of admiring myself, I realise something. I have to come up with a name for him. Many different options appear in my head, like Snow, Hikaru, Luni, Sora, Hikari and Hotaru, until I finally decide on one.
'Hmm, how about Zenin?' I think to myself. But my thoughts are interrupted when I smell something that sets off a ton of different alarms.
"Smoke..." I mutter. I look around the forest trying to find where it's coming from. My heart sinks the moment I realise it's source.
My pack!
