Sam
Sam was so pissed at Rick that he didn't even want to come to the training, but he came anyway. After the initial shock of Rick telling him that he had a mate, Sam figured out that the mate he was talking about was Sam. That explained his frustration from the last few days. The pain, the irritation, and over-the-top arousal. Sam didn't know if same-sex people could be mates, but there was no other explanation for Rick's wolf to leave a claiming mark on him and for his wolf to do the same. Sam was sick of wanting Rick and him rejecting Sam again and again. And Nathan...if Sam had any doubt, Rick harbored feelings for his old friend. He cleared it yesterday. He was still in love with his friend. He was still hung up on him. When the heart is already full, how can it make space for a new person? He couldn't let that self-absorbed bastard run his life.
"We will continue training our wolves today," Rick announced, his eyes looking at everyone except Sam.
"We will change into our wolves just like last time," Rick said without acknowledging the fact that Sam hadn't been able to change the last time he tried—not that he tried. He wanted to hide his wolf's identity, scared after what his wolf had done to Rick, giving him a claiming mark. Everyone changed into their wolves while Sam stood in his human form, standing out like a sore thumb.
"Do you need a special invitation?" Rick barked, his eyes shimmering with anger.
"You know, I can't." Sam bit the insides of his lips, tasting blood. Rick walked towards him almost in slow motion. His eyes trained on him, intense, angry.
"You have left me no option," Rick growled before pushing Sam on the ground and pressing on his shoulder. Sam tried to resist, but Rick was far stronger than him.
"Change, Sam. Don't make me ask again," Rick yelled. He used his alpha voice to command him. As a pack creature, the voice stirred his wolf to obey, but Sam resisted.
"Fuck off," Sam muttered under his breath, his face close to the ground, breathing on the concrete floor.
"You are testing me. Don't make me force you," Rick dug his finger on his neck. "Change. Now!"
It was all too much for Sam's wolf. The Alpha was commanding and dominating him, forcing his wolf to come forward. Sam's body burned with the need to change; his muscles ached, and his skin itched. His wolf ripped through his skin, coming out with a growl.
Sam's wolf looked around in panic, never having seen so many wolves together. When he realized he was under an Alpha's command, he crouched low and stayed there.
"Sam?" The shock behind Rick's voice was evident.
There was silence, and everything stood still. No one spoke, no one made a move. The rest of the wolves grew restless, sensing the tension in the air. They made whining noises and looked uncomfortable.
"Let's go for a run," Rick said a few seconds later before ripping off his clothes and turning to his wolf. His brown wolf took off into the woods, and the other wolves followed. Sam didn't want to follow him, but the pack mentality was instilled in his wolf's DNA. He couldn't resist following the leader even if he wanted to.
They ran through the thick forest. Running with the pack was exhilarating. Mentally uplifting for his wolf. For the first time in his life, he felt like he belonged somewhere. Like there was a goal in his mundane life. Like he was finally home. When he was a wolf, they accepted him without judgment. The other wolves nudged him playfully, and he did the same to them. He raced with them, tossed around on the grassy forest floor, barking and howling happily. He forgot why he wasn't changing in the first place. If he was upset, he couldn't remember why. But then everything came back like a wall of brick when A more enormous brown wolf approached him. His wolf went still as Rick's wolf came close to sniff him. His wolf tried to step away and ignore him. He returns to enjoy his time with the other wolves, but Rick's wolf stands between him and the others. Rick's wolf tried to corner him, have him all for himself. When the other wolves tried to come close to Sam, Rick's wolf growled at them to scare them away. Sam didn't understand this possessive behavior, or perhaps he did, but he didn't like it.
