Sam

Sam was fuming. Cormia, one of his teammates, was giggling like a maniac at something Rick said. And Rick was smiling back at her. Sam couldn't remember the last time Rick smiled at him like that. He was always strict and professional with Sam so he didn't understand why he was being so friendly with Cormia.

"You are going to be on my team today," Liam said, sitting beside Sam.

Sam frowned. "I thought I was in Mina's team."

"Her team is playing as the prey. Rick wanted you to play as a predator."

Sam gulped. He wasn't sure if he was ready to play as a predator yet but he was willing to try.

"I have some strategies..."

Sam nodded and Liam discussed all the strategies they were going to use to capture as many prey as possible in a short time.

Sam's eyes flickered to Rick for a second to see him watching them with a frown. When Rick realized he was caught he held Sam's gaze instead of looking away. Sam gasped at the intensity of his gaze before looking down, his heart speeding up at the small interaction.

Sam tried his best to capture at least one Prey before the end of the game but he failed miserably. His team won the game but he did nothing to contribute to the victory. He didn't even want to think how disappointed Rick would be at him.

"I am exhausted," Mina announced just as they were resting after the game. "Anyone wants to go out for drinks afterward?"

Sam kept his mouth shut, he knew he wasn't invited to things like that. Clan members kept their distance from him. But he listened as people agreed to her plan.

"I could use a couple of Howlers," Cormia chimed in.

"Me too—" Liam added.

"What you guys need is training, not drinks during practice days."

Sam didn't need to guess who spoke. He could recognize the sound from across the training hall.

"There is still a lot of time left—"

Sam looked at Beth wondering if she had lost her mind talking back to Rick.

"Lot of time left? With the kind of shitty performance you are giving, even four years is not going to be enough. I can't believe you are planning to slack off when you should be resting and preparing for tomorrow's training."

Sam tensed, why did it feel like it was directed at him even though he had no part in the plan?

Everyone felt the burn of his words, especially Sam.

"What the heck was that?" Mina chuckled after Rick left.

"He was ready to whoop some asses today," someone commented. Sam gulped nervously but felt a wave of defiance run through his body.

"Can I join you guys?" Sam asked, turning to Mina.

"Yeah," she said. "Of course."

Sam's eyes darted nervously around the bar, his legs shaking under the table. Sam couldn't remember the last time he visited a bar. Most of his teammates were either gone home or lost in the sea of people. Sam should have gone home too if he wasn't brewing with anger at Rick. First, Rick did not stop Cormia from flirting with him. Second, he did not address his anger at Sam's performance directly with Sam, instead of being rude to the entire team. Third, Sam felt frustrated with himself for not being able to move on from his crush on Rick.

Sam had matched with a guy on a dating site a few days ago. The man was at the party, which was why Sam hadn't left yet, even though he wanted to.

Sam opened the man's profile and texted him again.
