I sit and close the door behind me. I buckle my seat belt, place my backpack at my feet and fold my hands on my laps. Rhett does the same and starts the car. We are now heading towards his house. I wonder silently what my parents are doing, are they looking for me? Or are they relieved that I'm finally gone?
"What's your name kid?" Rhett asks.
"Evelyn" I respond, "Evelyn Nova"
"Evelyn" he tests my name "How old are you?"
"I'm seventeen"
"Really?" he turns around to take a quick look at me, "you don't look seventeen, you look fourteen."
"I know, but I'll be turning eighteen this November"
"Wow" he says, still surprised, then asks, "where are your parents?"
"At home"
"Do they know you came to see me"
"They know I'm out" I say simply, then add, "They don't really care or mind."
"Sure?" he insists.
"As sure as we'll find Link." I say honestly.
"I'm not even sure about that anymore" Rhett says with a sigh.
"I know" I console him, "it's hard to picture a clear sky when it's stormy and heavy with black clouds. But eventually those clouds will move and they'll reveal a rainbow."
Rhett looks at me again, then tells me, "It is true. It's just really hard to believe sometimes." He says this as if he were talking to another adult instead of with a child.
"You know, when Stevie made that phone call and told me that a mythical beast wanted to see me I got really irritated. You know, I thought you were here for a picture and a signature from me, while I'm worried sick about Link. Several people only care because they want a daily dose of entertainment, but they don't realize how bad this really is. Christy's alone with the children, she's looking for a job. She's not okay, Link's unexplained absence has destroyed her. It's destroyed everyone who knew him perso nally. I don't think our viewers are capable of understanding that."
"I do, and although I've never personally met him, I do feel terrible" I say. "But you are right, as unperfect humans we tend to see superficially, but we never really see what lies in the depths of the ocean."
"You know" Rhett says, "you speak quite wise for your age"
"Thanks"
Once we arrive he parks his car and gets out, I don't wait for him to open the door. I get out myself. Jessie, his wife, came up to the door to receive us.
"Hello, welcome" she greeted us.The hello was directed to both of us, but the welcoming was for me.
"Hi hunny" Rhett says giving Jessie a little kiss in her lips, I glance back at the car.
"This is Evelyn" Rhett introduces me to Jessie, "Evelyn, this is my wife Jessie"
Before I can even say hi, Jessie smiles and says, "That's a nice name, how old are you?"
"Thanks, I'm seventeen" then I add, "It's a pleasure to meet you in person Mrs.McLaughlin."
"The pleasure is mine," she smiled again, "please come in."
We step inside. I feel somewhat uneasy, it's nothing specific about their house. It's just I usually feel this way when I'm around strangers, or in a place I've never been to before.
"Take a seat around the table. We are about to have breakfast. You can leave your backpack ." Rhett nudged me toward the chair next to him. I sit at his left and fold my hands on my lap. As we eat I tell them but the research and the conclusion I drew. At first they don't believe it, but I almost sure Link is there. We're else would he be?After we eat I ask Rhett if he can take me over to Christy's. He tells me it isn't a good idea because she doesn't want to discuss Link, she's deeply hurt. I know she's hurt, but she's Link's wife, she knows him more than I do. After all, she lives with him, I'm just his audience on YouTube.
I finally convince him to take me, he parks in front of the house and I get off.
